A coworker wants a smaller light to keep in his tackle box to use while he is fishing at night. He wants something that is bright, throws well, and is under $30 (maybe $40). He will want it to run on cheap batteries, not anything "expensive". He likes my Fenix L2D Q5, and PD30's, but doesn't want to spend that much. Any suggestions?

$30 tacklebox light? Sounds like he needs one of those flood-to-throw(FTT) lights available from shiningbeam or dealextreme. As the name implies, the beam is adjustable from 100% flood to 100% throw and anything in between.

Personally, I'd get the ones available from shiningbeam as many of his lights come with neutral or warm tint LEDs which are better suited for outdoor usage than the typical cool white LEDs from DX and almost every other manufacturer/retailer. Just go to any of the above online retailer's website and type "flood" in the search function and you should get a list of the many FTT lights available. A good one to go for would be the Romisen RC-29 II NW Neutral White Flood-to-Throw that uses commonly available AA batteries. If higher output is desired, use the 16340 or 18650 versions.

I would suggest a Romisen RC-N3. I bought one from ShiningBeam.com in March of 2010 and really like it. Plenty of throw, runs on 2 AA batteries, and the on/off button even glows in the dark. Don't forget the CPFUser discount!

RC-N3 is actually quite floody, Eagle-Tac P100A2 throws much better.
