Building a cheap thrower ?

I already have a thrower , my 2D mag !
It can hump it to 300 meters and then maybe some .

Im thinking , hmmm , do I want a 18650 thrower and will it compete @ 300 meters :ooo:

Im really leaning towards the cheapest host , the Sacredfire 009 .
I have a very nice XR-E Q5 emitter thats above average that I was planning on trying , also possibly try a XP-G but there is that focus issue , but , I should be able to buy http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18841 a spare reflector or two if mods are needed .

I know people ask about throwers all the time , but 150 meters is like within range of my P60 hosts . Can these , if at all , hit the 300 meter mark , or should I just do an even hotter Mag mod , and try for 500 meters .
Im currently driving my XP-G R4 Mag 2D very gently @ close to 5A , I'm pushing a Xp-G R5 over 6A in a P60 pill so Im sure I can do as well or maybe better with a Mag :thinking: Anyways ..

There was a DX light that I was looking at 3-4 weeks ago it had a really deep reflector, and an XRE-Q5, and quite a few DX reviewers praising it for its high lux.

for the life of me I can't find it.

Generaly quite easy to mod but it depends what type of mod you want to do. I've got one with a Dereelight pill fitted, works well!! Build quality on mine is surprisingly good

looking to experiment :

So must be able to chop and change + buy parts .

Still like the Sacredfire , also has a deep reflector + I can buy more if needed .

Im going to put together the other heatsink / XP-G R4 I have + test some drivers [ Also ordered a driver ] to see what sort of AMP's I can put to the XP-G R4 . See if I cant boost it so to speak . If it works ok I might scavenge a R5 from one of the P60 hosts [ Cutter is out of R5s ATM ] and rebuild the Mag 2D and see if I cant push 500 Meters . A 2D that can do half a K :hitit:

Get yourself a DBS reflector and use that in a Mag host
The DBS reflector will need a sleeve of some sort because it
has a smaller diameter than a Mag reflector.
It also sits deeper than a Mag reflector so the lip around the heatsink
will need to be removed so that it can be pushed further into the
Mag body.
Cree Q5 or R2 + whatever board you like.

The one I build in a 1C Mag host uses a multi output 7135 board
High gives me 1400mA :naughty:

Maybe not as cheap as your planned build BUT the proven DBS reflector
makes it worthwhile :cool:

XP-G won't work in a dedicated XR-E thrower, it wouldn't focus like it should. I think your best bet is to look at a thrower based on an SSC P4 led or possibly an aspheric or TIR optic.

Works well in my Maglite .

So Im not sure how other large reflectors would work , maybe some cutting needed to focus the beam .

I will buy a light to play with latter in the week .

Well after much soul searching , I went with the UniqueFire

I had to take into consideration the Emitter in the light and possible driver options for boosting output and possible reflector options AKA after market .

Make for a nice project in anyways .

Would it be possible for 4sevens to add an aspheric lens to their turbos to make them better throwers?
