So I put in a CREE drop-in from Deal Extreme and after 10 seconds I started to smell burning plastic. Has anyone ever had this problem? The G2 I have is about 3-4 years old now. Would that be an issue for the lamp to burn the tube? Below are the links to parts I purchased to upgrade the G2. If there is a simple way to fix this that would really make my day.

If you take a look at the Jeers sub-forum on CPF, you'll notice that DX sometimes says its O.K. to use a product in an unsafe way.

Perhaps that particular Cree drop-in would work better in an aluminum light, like a Surefire 6P; rather than a polymer light that isn't quite as good at disapating heat. It's not the light, it's the drop-in.

um...when working with high current or multi-cell applications its best to stick to the known brands on lithium primaries such as surefire, streamlight, Duracell, energizer, rayovac, panasonic, etc that has been reviewed before on the forum. these typically have PTC and other safety systems built in that limits high current output when the operating temperature becomes a concern.

Don't take risks when it comes to buying cheap cells, ask around and you'll receive numerous responses of good deals on good batteries. theres already a few cases so far of unknown name brands going :poof: in flashlights. From personal experience using a G2 [with standard P60 LOLA] G2's nitrolon plastic is difficult to melt and the lexan will warp before it does in roughly 20 minutes after activation.

what you are smelling is most likely the plastic that covers the cells....which isn't something I'd look forward to. :ohgeez:

Step 1. Take those batteries out of your light and dump every one of them in the trash. (I'm being serious. This is for your safety / well being and the well being of others around you and your house / assets.)

Step 2. Take a look at the drop in and see if there is any plastic which could be from manufacturing.

Step 3. Put in some good quality CR123A cells. (SureFire, Duracell, Engergizer, Sanyo or even Titanium brand cells Battery Station cells would be OK too.)

Thats it. All done! w00t! (most likely)
