Can the ARC UV purify water

I know UV light is becoming more and more popular to treat water while backpacking or camping.

Can the Arc UV be used for this?

Personally I don't think so. If you need to purify water, I'd buy a devise specifically for that purpose (including a true filter, not just light).

I'd like to hear other opinions, however.

Acording to this site, "...Given proper dosage, UV wavelengths ranging from 240 to 280 nanometers (nm) deactivate, or effectively kill, microorganisms by damaging their DNA so as to prevent the DNA, and the organism, from replicating (Harm, 1980)..."

Don't rely on it. Even if it emits in the right range, it's not designed to purify water.

As has been said above, the answer is no, and that's because the wavelength produced by the LED used in the Arc-UV is about 105nm longer than the maximum of the range found to be effective in killing (neutering?) water-borne microorganisms.

I have looked at those but they are too bulky to carry and with my outdoor activity level, I am likely to break the flourescent bulb on it.
