Celluar phone photography-boon or bane?

While I'm sure that professional photographers won't be giving up their cameras any time soon, the cameras on my last few iPhones have been the best I've ever owned.

Please tell me if I'm being a pain and posting to many cellphone pics this is tonight's sunset

ty i love sunsets and photography. what a time we live in we can carry a camera in are pocket thats a computer and a phone
"When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole. We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket." --Nikola Tesla

And as the standard of comfort rose, as the complexity of the mechanism of living increased life in the country had become more and more costly, or narrow and impossible. The disappearance of vicar and squire, the extinction of the general practitioner by the city specialist, had robbed the village of its last touch of culture. After telephone, kinematograph and phonograph had replaced newspaper, book, schoolmaster, and letter, to live outside the range of the electric cables was to live an isolated savage. In the country were neither means of being clothed nor fed (according to the refined conceptions of the time),no efficient doctors for an emergency, no company and no pursuits.

He opened the roller with a quick movement, and a confusion of brilliant fabrics poured out over his knees."You lived, Sire, in a period essentially cylindrical --the Victorian. With a tendency to the hemisphere in hats. Circular curves always. Now --" He flicked out a little appliance the size and appearance of a keyless watch, whirled the knob, and behold -- a little figure in white appeared kinetoscope fashion on the dial, walking and turning. The tailor caught up a pattern of bluish white satin. "That is my conception of your immediate treatment," he said.

It doesn't seem like that long ago the little device called PDA went from personal only device to being able to "beam" files to another user.

Mrs Fixer and I went shopping one afternoon for such a device to no avail. The smartphone had replaced to PDA. I was eyeballing a Windows phone because it was very similar to a PDA. If I recall correct the Blackberry was all the rage. I opted for an Android. No physical keyboard making the screen real small, no flip open hinge to break. Just a virtual keyboard.

What sold me was when my son could guess every song I was playing on my computer by pressing a "listen" tab on his Android and receiving the information. (Shazam). And it had a camera. What? Not some junky 1.2mp number either. If I recall it was like 8mp. My Nikon D80 was only 10 mp. Holy crap!! These smart phones are about to change the world.

I showed my new Android to my flip phone carrying boss who said "aint you ever gonna grow up?" He thought it was a toy until I showed him my Electronic Measure Device (EDM), a level, an asphalt calculator and some other construction related apps.

Soon after that there was a "free" photo editor app called of all things "photo editor", which was a lightweight app capable of Photoshop like behavior on an Android phone. It wasn't long before my 10#'s of SLR gear started collecting dust.

When I had a project that required "good" photos the Nikon gear still remained the go to. Yet I found myself using the smart phone camera more and more. The SLR gear less and less. Never went mirrorless. Frankly I like the sound the SLR makes when the mirror slaps closed. Ironically the smart phone camera mimics that sound. The modern smart phone camera will probably never duplicate the SLR due to sensor size. But they sure have come a long ways trying to.

I came in during the Palm OS era. I loved them, had a bunch of Palms. I was sad when the palm os fell out of favor. Sony made the best devices.

im starting to think i misunderstood the concept of this thread. man i suck at staying on subject my friends. but ill work on that as well.

Here ya go, raggie33,

The phrase "boon or a bane" represents a balance or trade-off, typically when discussing the pros and cons of a situation, decision, or technology. You may use it in discussions where the benefits (boon) and disadvantages (bane) are weighed against each other.

In short:

"Boon or a bane" means to weigh the positive and negative aspects of something to understand whether it's beneficial or detrimental overall.
What Does "Boon or a Bane" Mean?
The key meaning of the phrase is that something has the potential to be either beneficial or detrimental. Whether it acts as a boon or bane depends on how it is used or applied in a given set of circumstances. This suggests that the object or idea in question has two sides, making it unclear if it's good or bad.

ok i understand better now ty. i was wondering why no one else was posting photos ty. i think there both good and bad. good becuase my dslr weighs way way more. bad becuase maybe cellphones ai takes the art out of photography

At my job security dept as well as engineering used to have digital cameras, for ID pictures, and for everything else around buildings that needed to be documented, for about a decade about dozen of cameras are in a box in a storage room, no longer used, all are in working order, from simple point and shoot cameras, to dslr looking ones, all pictures are taken with cell phone cameras now, not only modern phones take better pictures, those files are much easier to upload, no need for wires, or memory card removed and inserted into reader, everything is done thru emails. I suspect neither department will ever buy another camera again.

How big are those high quality files taken with medium format sensors? or even with 24x36 sensors, you do not really walk around with DSLR all the time, like you do with phones.

DSLR has its place, and phones have theirs, they do not really compete. I have not seen a wedding or sports photographer dump their DSLR in favor of a phone.
