I'm planning my first mag mod using 12000 mAh NiMH D cells. I have several mag chargers, could these be used to charge the batteries? If so what precautions, and how long would charging take? Thanks, in advance!

The factory charger will charge 4-6 cells.

You use 3 of the D cells in the Magcharger, but you would have to replace the charger with another designed to charge 3 cells. Most chargers won't charge through the the diode in the light itself, it usually has to be removed.

The downside to this is a risk of short through the contacts.

This just works, I tried it already. The only thing, is that the constant-current source (an LM 317T) will get a little warmer, as there's more voltage drop over it.

Charging time will be very long.

(12000/230) * 1.5 = about 78 hours!! That's more than 3 days & 3 nights!!

Better look for another solutions....

Looks like it would be a good way to trickle charge your cells if you don't mind charging in series.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will look for another solution. I'll have time while I wait 3 days and 3 nights for my batteries to charge.
