anything like this available for under $100? don't care if it's a cheap chinese brand, as long as it works!

looks like i found one! how does this compare to the Stanley HID 3000 - aside from being brighter and bigger? would this be dimmable?

Rechargeable 35W HID Spotlight

If you need serious light power, HID is the only way to go. Compared with quartz-halogen, HID has far longer bulb life, uses less energy and is much brighter. With a pounding 3300 lumens, this spotlight is ideally suited to search and rescue, boating, professional shooters, security or other high-power applications. It's housed in a tough weather-resistant ABS housing and has a handy shoulder strap for extended use. The built-in rechargeable battery gives about 50 minutes of continuous use and it recharges either from the mains plugpack or a car cigarette lighter socket.

Specifications:
• Type: HID Xenon lamp
• Voltage: 12V
• Power: 35W
• Output: 3300 lumens
• Colour temp: 6000K
• Battery:12V 7Ah rechargeable lead acid battery
• Charge time: 15-18 hours
• Run time: 50 mins+ at full charge
• Mains adaptor: 15VDC 500mA
• Dimensions: 300(L) x 210(Dia)mm
• Weight: 3.8kg

thanks man! good to know its a decent product!

do you know anything else in the same price range that would actually have a dimmer? or would DIY dimmer be viable?

I'm actually thinking of using this to light up video and photography,so being able to control the output would be really really good!

Cheers

Sounds like a question that you should be asking the guys over in theGeneral Light Discussion forum.

Ditto.

There are hundreds of lights that meet the above qualifications though the "dimable" parameter almost excluded most basic forms of spotlight. I personally think the OP should get a budget P7 LED light.

Have a look at some of the Solarforce P7 lights Dharmaone. Most are under $100. This will get you started.

could dimming be added DIY to this HID light by using a variable resistor, or would it require something like a PWM dimmer - like leds?

thanks

Bold emphasis mine, which light are you referring to? LEDs and incans are dimable, HID's are not. The ballast feeds constant voltage to the bulb.

At the design level, dimming a HID is pretty easy. Once they are struck, HIDS power supplies are usually somewhat constant current supplies as well, so one just needs to change the current to the bulb. That said, the bulbs generally have a sweet spot they like to operate in. Work outside that area and the color changes, life can be impacted, etc.
