Cheap part for variable speed HF 8x12?

Saw this router speed control at HF, was wondering if it might work to slow down my HF 8x12 for threading operations.

Anyone know if this might work?

Look at the outside of the motor ... if there are two removable caps that hold in a pair of carbon brushes, your good to go.

On edit, the HF site shows it has a single phase AC induction motor, which will not work with a router speed control.

Hmmm...That could be a bit tricky, I wonder if Will or Will might know...

I don't remember, since I actually never used the stock motor - I never turned it "ON". My AC motor was replaced with a 180V DC motor and KB 220V AC to DC speed controller. I don't even remember if I even have the old motor - I might have given it to DonShock when he bought my lathe back in December.

I have used one of those speed controllers on my router. It absolutely will slow the router down, but it also kills the power. I tried it a few times and stopped using it.

I don't think the stock motor does have brushes.

I have that very same router speed controller from HF. I bought it years ago & forgot what I used it for. I do remember it worked for what I needed but I never used it again.

I never thought of trying it on the lathe & I don't think I will. :grin2:

Thanks, I think I'll go with my original plan of either adding an extra pulley, or making a hand crank for threading (mostly for internal threading). My reflexes just aren't good enough at the stock minimum speed.

There's a guy on the LM yahoo group that put a hand crank on the leadscrew (tail stock end) on the LM8x14. You can see pictures of it in the photos section. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lathemaster/photos/album/1958881935/pic/list

Try emailing the guy, maybe he can probably help you or even offer the service?
