Similarly, the FDA also announced today that they will be detaining imported shipments of farm raised catfish, basa, dace, eel, and shrimp to further check for unlawful chemicals that have been repeately found in samples. Note that this is not processed food but previously frozen fresh seafood products that you are likely to find in your local supermarket or maybe even your local fish monger's "fresh" seafood display case or at your favorite seafood restaurant.
Personally I'd be suspect of a lot of processed food products that are imported from Asia, as it isn't only China, but a lot of the food packaging companies in Japan, Viet Nam, India, et al, may often use ingredients that are imported from China.
As for the CNN article, I'd be inclined to believe that it may be damage control on the part of the Chinese. There's nothing to say that they didn't open 250 or more other small companies to replace the 180 that they closed. In observing some of the patterns of Chinese immigrant businesses in the U.S., it's not unusal to see one go out of business one week and then see it open up the following week (or sometimes simultaneously) at a different location under a different business name.
