Hello I am new to this forum. I have learned a lot from the many posters here. I have decided to keep my collection small for now. Due to having a new baby daughter and living overseas. I am considering a Nitecore D 10 and an HDS RA -clicky(140 lumens) as my first two lights. Any suggestions on those two lights

To better assist you, I have changed your thread title to "Choosing between the Nitecore D10 and the HDS RA-clicky ?"

I do know that the RA-clicky is an extremely popular light here, you might want to review The Flashaholic's "Must-Have" List, that light is #1 on that list by popular voting.

I think that depends on what you're going to use this for? If you need just an "around the house" light, I'd say the D10. It's really small, uses typical AA batteries, and provides a good amount of spill with short to medium throw. If you need something with more throw for outdoor use or if you're going to beat on it, then the RA would be the better choice. It's indestructible, brighter (depending on which model you get), and throws farther. It is more expensive but you get programmability and real beefiness.

I'd say start with the D10. Don't have one myself but most members here rave about them.

I think you should start with less expensive lights, especially considering your situation, and get used to them first and to get a better idea of what your needs are for an EDC light.

Better to spend less money on a light that you may not be happy with. And, as far as I know the Ra lights are custom orderable with different beam patterns and tints, so choosing one that is best for your use would be difficult and you might end up with something you don't like because it doesn't fit your needs.

I have the Nitecore D10 SP and it is my favourite light.

However there is one specific point in favour of the Ra clicky: It can be set to a very dim low.

I have a baby as well and a dim low is really useful. I use a Quark in moonmode to look after the baby. When it was just a few months old it slept in our bedroom and we used the Quark as nightlight running the whole night in moonmode against the ceiling. The dim light won't blind you at night or wake up the baby.

But also for me the price of the Ra hurts too much, that's why I bough the Quark. I don't say that it's not worth the price, I'm far from that. But being in the same situation as you I rather buy several lights for different applications for the same price as one Ra.

So if you want to use the light also in the house the lowest level of the D10 is IMHO not low enough. As an EDC however the D10 is truly wonderful.

I just skimmed through the comments so I may have missed some details, but, for the record, I own an HDS 170 and 2 D10's, one the newer SP (3 level) and an older ramping model. I also own several 4Sevens lights and a smattering of other less mentionable ones that do not have a bearing on this discussion.

So, if it were *me* asking this question, and knowing what I know now from experience. I would be ordering myself a new HDS clicky first, if my budget allowed for it. I might have gone for the High CRI vs the vanilla 140, just for the benefit of the High CRI factor (and it's the light that is on it's way to me as I type this). The 170, which I have, is a great light and it's doing double duty as my work light where I need some extra throw, but in my personal use, the high rarely gets touched, so the High CRI will more than likely be enough for personal use. Having said that, the 140GT is tempting, but I'm holding off until I get to compare the High CRI to the 170.

If, however, my budget was screaming at me........ I would not hesitate to order the D10 SP, which I prefer over the older style ramping model. Yes, I know.... I'm an odd ball that way, but I just like the simplicity of click to turn on, press and hold to quickly cycle between 3 levels and that's it. The disco modes... well, I don't have a problem with the Strobe function if you're in a bind, but the SOS mode..... besides a few geeks like myself, who knows morse code anymore?!?!? The older ramping model is fine, I have a trit installed in that one, but honestly, I prefer the SP. For the record, I use 14500 cells in my D10s and RCR123's in my HDS light. I'm considering switching to the EX10 over the D10, just to keep things to the same battery.... but then again, my D10 will run on any AA battery if need be, and CR123 primaries are hard to find locally and very expensive if I do find them......

The HDS is a helluva fine light...... my first choice, bar none..... but you'll have to pry the D10's from my cold dead fingers if you want them.... both are great lights. Let your budget be your guide. In my case, I always, when faced with a choice of two, and I know I'm eventually going to get both.... try to buy the more costly one first... it makes it so much easier to buy the cheaper one later!

Yes, skip the D10 and just get a Clicky. Nitecore lights are a crap shoot when it comes to quality.
