I just skimmed through the comments so I may have missed some details, but, for the record, I own an HDS 170 and 2 D10's, one the newer SP (3 level) and an older ramping model. I also own several 4Sevens lights and a smattering of other less mentionable ones that do not have a bearing on this discussion.
So, if it were *me* asking this question, and knowing what I know now from experience. I would be ordering myself a new HDS clicky first, if my budget allowed for it. I might have gone for the High CRI vs the vanilla 140, just for the benefit of the High CRI factor (and it's the light that is on it's way to me as I type this). The 170, which I have, is a great light and it's doing double duty as my work light where I need some extra throw, but in my personal use, the high rarely gets touched, so the High CRI will more than likely be enough for personal use. Having said that, the 140GT is tempting, but I'm holding off until I get to compare the High CRI to the 170.
If, however, my budget was screaming at me........ I would not hesitate to order the D10 SP, which I prefer over the older style ramping model. Yes, I know.... I'm an odd ball that way, but I just like the simplicity of click to turn on, press and hold to quickly cycle between 3 levels and that's it. The disco modes... well, I don't have a problem with the Strobe function if you're in a bind, but the SOS mode..... besides a few geeks like myself, who knows morse code anymore?!?!? The older ramping model is fine, I have a trit installed in that one, but honestly, I prefer the SP. For the record, I use 14500 cells in my D10s and RCR123's in my HDS light. I'm considering switching to the EX10 over the D10, just to keep things to the same battery.... but then again, my D10 will run on any AA battery if need be, and CR123 primaries are hard to find locally and very expensive if I do find them......
The HDS is a helluva fine light...... my first choice, bar none..... but you'll have to pry the D10's from my cold dead fingers if you want them.... both are great lights. Let your budget be your guide. In my case, I always, when faced with a choice of two, and I know I'm eventually going to get both.... try to buy the more costly one first... it makes it so much easier to buy the cheaper one later!
