I have owned one of these (2 x AA size) for 30 years

http://plasticsnetwork.aucb.ac.uk/index.asp?page=item&filename=AIBDC%20catalogue&id=7197&mwsquery={website1}={design%20and%20designers}

and it has travelled the world with me.

It has an advantage over a cylindrical torch: it can be stood on a surface and the light directed. A design classic.

Any ideas how I might find another in UK? I keep searching eBay without success.

Is there a modern product anything like this?

Is there an MES 3v LED that will replace the incandescent bulb, which is the pointed pen-torch type?

My first post: it is amazing what specialist forums can be found!

And what collective knowledge can be drawn on.

I've never seen one of those before. I am sure there are Many modern equivalents to be had.

Not sure what your budget is, but the Streamlight Sidewinder comes to mind.

I've still got one of the originals skulking around in a toolbox somewhere, hope I haven't left a set of alkalines in it. Haven't thought about it in years much less used it.

Not very bright but the light can be aimed almost anywhere.

OMG that one brings back memories :)

Long before I became a flashaholic.

Mine was a 2-AA (smaller version?), that was obtained from sending in UPCs for Duracell batts. Wait 6-8 weeks, and it came in the mail.

I can't remember what happened to it, died somehow, but was a handy little thing for a long while.

You had to pry off on of the flat sides of the case to access the AA's (side by side config)

It just snapped back together and you were good to go.
