Coolest running SMD LED?

I'm looking for a bright SMD LED to build a custom set of position side light bulbs for my car. I want them to be brighter than the standard 1.5watt LEDs that are available on ebay... but as the bulbs are small, there won't be much space for heatsinks.

So, I'd like to know if there is a small, bright SMD LED available that can run with minimal heatsinking? Also, suggestions on where to get them would be useful.

Many thanks guys ;)

You can try using Cree, Lumileds, or Nichia 4-pin style LEDs.. They will probably be much brighter than the SMD LED and easier to assembly by hand... They also don't need any heat sinking..

Hi R33E8, thanks for your advice. Can you suggest something more specific and where to get them please? I thought CREE LEDs all run quite hot so didn't bother looking into them. Are there ones that run cool? Also, are the Nichia ones bright?

The CRee XP-G is currently the most efficient LED available, so it will produce the least heat. If you're running under 3-500mA, it should be fine on a small heatsink.

I'm also designing a T10/w5w for my position lights.
I have ordered cool white XP-Gs cause they're the most efficient.
Of course the tiny T10 can't fit the driver.
In a few days, I'll start experimenting with different setups. Then we'll see how it reacts, when driven at 350ma and a very small heatsink...

That's exactly what I'm looking to do for a T10/501 bulb. But I was thinking of simply having them driven directly. My main concern is heat as I've had so many LED die as a result of excessive heat. Are you looking at the R5?

I can't find where to get hold of these Cree XP-G in the UK, can someone suggest a supplier for these?

R5 is the name!
cutter led shop is the place - Australia

Still waiting for mine to arrive.

I'try to use 1 piece of these per led. These are 13X13X11.5 mm. I'll trimm them in a round shape 10mm. Perhaps 2 of these 1 on top of each other glued with thermal sillicone is a better choice. They also come in alu stuff.

Thanks for the link... those heatsinks look pretty cool... I was thinking of just having a simple aluminium block...

Just out of interest, how are you planning to drive them? I'm a bit of a novice in electronics so some ideas/advice would be very much appreciated!
