Corrupt pci.sys file in XP...Opinions please

My computer had been shut off for about a month, I turn it on the other day, and all of a sudden I get this error message saying the pci.sys file was missing or corrupt, and XP (pro) won't boot.

So, I copied a good copy of the file from another XP system onto my hard disk in the system32\drivers directory (where it belongs), and fired up my system. At first, I thought I fixed the problem because XP booted normally. But when I clicked my user name and entered my password, the system rebooted by itself, and now the pci.sys file is corrupt once again.

Could this just be a bad sector on the drive and in need of a clean sweep and reinstall, a sign that my drive is on it's way out, or should I just buy a new drive?

Interesting, but these help instructions are for Windows 2000, not XP. I wouldn't be surprised if the instructions are similar, though.

I can't use the repair option because my XP Pro disk is a "Special" version, meant for developer use, and the disk is not bootable. However, if someone knows what files that need to be edited or added to make it bootable, it would be a great help.

Hmm...off topic thought...XP...turn it 90 degrees to the right and it looks like an old school smiley...wonder if there's any significance to the feeling it depicts...........................
