My computer had been shut off for about a month, I turn it on the other day, and all of a sudden I get this error message saying the pci.sys file was missing or corrupt, and XP (pro) won't boot.
So, I copied a good copy of the file from another XP system onto my hard disk in the system32\drivers directory (where it belongs), and fired up my system. At first, I thought I fixed the problem because XP booted normally. But when I clicked my user name and entered my password, the system rebooted by itself, and now the pci.sys file is corrupt once again.
Could this just be a bad sector on the drive and in need of a clean sweep and reinstall, a sign that my drive is on it's way out, or should I just buy a new drive?
