I've seen members refer to the R4 bin but was wondering if it is known for sure that Cree will actually produce this with the predicted specs. Does this already exist as a prototype and just needs to be scaled up for production quantities? Or is it just speculation that it will be able to be produced eventually? What's after the R4, and how come we never hear about that? I would think efficiency of the current platform would be tapering off and we would need a major design improvement to realize appreciable gains in performance at some point. Any comments?

You're right on with all of your points, but I do believe, as an unsupported personal opinion, that Cree will at least get to the R4 bin of its previously released roadmap. They may need another advancement in their die before their leds climb in ouput or efficiency. I think the R4 will be available in mass quantities by the end of the year.

thanks daveman -
do you think we'll see R4's by the end of the year just based on Cree's previous rate of introducing new bins?

My guess is we will see them around summer time(R2s are already out). Definitely before the end of the year, unless they start following Luxeon's method.

For that to happen, Cree will have to jump the R3 bin, in my opinion. Which would not be entirely unthinkable as they virutually jumped the Q3 bin last year. I still believe the end of the year is when R4s will be coming out.

I doubt there will be any hurry to get this out with Phillips struggling to even reliably match Q2's.
