If anyone here goes to CSULB you'll notice that on Palo Verde near the engineering buildings the streetlights have been converted to led. They're brighter and more evenly light the streets with pure white lights. I wonder what kind of led's they use because they're huge I haven't counted the array but it looked to be like a 30 led array. If they were CREE I bet they could get away with less and be more energy efficient. I doubt they're CREE because for some reason government agencies love to buy luxeons probably because of cost or that when non led people think bright led they first think luxeon.

They have the same lights on Bellflower as well. I counted one of the arrays on Palo Verde and it looked like 100 emitters. I am stoked to see that they are installing these, they must have cost a small fortune.

qwertyydude we still need to tag up and compare lights. If you are around campus during the break let me know.

While I agree that Luxeon in over-hyped, it's the manufacturer making the fixture that is choosing the components, not the local bureaucracy picking Cree over Luxeon. In this respect it nees to be questioned why Cree isn't making themselves more attractive as a supplier. That's how business works.

Given the efficiency improvements we are seeing with LEDs that haven't even hit production yet I still have serious reservations as to this type of upgrade to mass lighting. Street lights for instance likely have a very long projected 'cost out' before improved efficiency pays for itself.
