I'm new here and trying to find someone to take on a custom project. You folks really seem to have your "Stuff Wired" (To paraphrase an old Marine saying).
How difficult would it be to cut-off the head of my SF 6P, thread that part and thread an aluminum tube to fit? What about machining a tailcap for the 6P, without knurling?
I know I could simply have the knurling removed from my 6P but that won't
work for me. I don't have access to a shop or a machinist in my circle of friends.
Any positive input would be greatly appreciated. Ray

Hi ferretray - welcome to CPF.:)

There is no difficulty in doing what you say, but it may not be cost effective depending on what you want to achieve.

You will probably get more response to your enquiry if you can explain you aims a little more fully.

Colin, Thanks for taking the time to respond.
My objective is a SF 6P of standard outer dimensions with a smooth surface, including the tailcap.
I don't mind paying well for quality equipment. All my leather gear is custom made. My CCW pistol and my knives are custom(ized) to suit my needs.
I've found that quality up-front will save one problems in the long term.

You mean something like the long one in this pic'?
Its 6P compatible all the way.

It started out with only two flats on the battery tube, but four do give a better grip. The tailcap knurling is
fine and does make it much easier to turn with forefinger and thumb whilst holding the light in the fist.

Colin, That's close to what I'd like to have done. Actually I could save the maker some steps. I'd like the "Tube", or body, to be round it's entire length.
On the tailcap, I would want the "Lip", or serrations around the bottom high enough for the light to "Stand Alone" and completely encircle the tailcap (Rather than cut-away, as on the light in the photo.), with no knurling.

ferretray ... I will be back from holiday at the beginning of August. If no one has stepped up by then send me a PM.:)

Colin.

I'm really surprised at the lack of response to this thread. I thought there were alot of folks custom machining lights, etc.,. on this website.

dude! you made a wish this morning and got it granted, almost, by evening!
I'd consider myself lucky. What did you want a whole of bunch of cnc machinists trying to underbid each other? ;)

really all I wanted to ask was what the ferret part of ferretray meant..? you have a ferret?

Ted, nobody has "Granted" anything. I had one person tell me to PM him several weeks from my initial post.
No, I have no wish for any bidding on the gear I'd like made. I'm new here so I don't know who does this type of work or I'd ask them directly. Someones initials in a post mean nothing to me.
I used to keep ferrets. They are truly some of the coolest entities extant. Dude

no offense intended with use of the term "granted" dude, just a figure of speach, and about the machinists bidding, that's was a jk..
uh, welcome to CPF!

ferrets are quite wonderful, I had one for 8+ years. I managed her diabetes for the last couple years of her life. They don't live long enough though. I hear they are trying to breed long lived-ness into them more these days..

all I meant to say was to give it a little time, i'm sure you'll get more responses, not many people at the boards todays anyway..

I had some battery tubes made by CNC Dan a long while back but I don't know where he went off to..

No offense taken. It's all good!
Ferrets are wonderful critters and unfortunately prone to tumors and other health issues. They're certainly too short-lived.
I get too attached to em'. I can't deal with them suffering the way they do, even with quality vet. care, and then having to put em' down.
A small critter like a ferret with it's high metabolism will never be long-lived. They sure do bring alot of joy to their humans!
I placate my ferret jones by playing with the little fella's at my local pet store when I stop in for supplies.

..aahh, I miss my ferrets too, I wish i could visit some in the petshop but guv. Arnold hasn't been able to get it through his thick head that there are no feral colonies of domestic ferrets, and they pose no danger to wildlife or anyone..the dopey guy..so ferrets are still illegal here..I still visit the other animals at the petshop though..

Ted, Don't get me started on Calif. lib-tard politics :D. I've spent time in Cali as a kid, a Marine, a sailor and a civilian adult. It's a beautiful place but ate-up with BS. I'll never return.
The governor of Texas recently remarked that Texans should be able to carry their firearms ANYWHERE
