cut down mag?

i was thinking with a battery holder like

which holds 3aa in a series in a d size battery that i could cut down my 3d to a 1d size and sacrifice some runtime for more portability.

how do people cut down their mag? i would think the tube would need rethreading afterwards to fit the cap? what tools are needed?
