KD's have more capacity. If you choose the protected, they have a 3A draw limit and they are 5mm longer than standard D size batteries.

I don't think so ... KD protected have no problem with 6A current ...

Really? Because mine are really hard to get started with a bulb that draws 3.5A and wont work at all on a bulb that draws 4.5A. When did you buy yours? If there are a newer batch that can handle 6A then I might have to buy a few new ones.

That is probably because the inrush current with incans can be twice as high at turn-on.

My Kai li-ions won't run my ROP anymore; they used to require double-tapping, but now it's somewhere over 100-tapping.

Ahhh, good point. I suppose I should figure out how to add a soft start to my ROP high Mags so that I could use the protected cells in them.
