D26 SSC P4?

Is there any market for.....

A SSC P4 U2SWOI drop in that's flexible enough for 1 17650 to 3 CR123's input and a drive level that gets say 180/200 lumens out the front?

I am on Cree overload and I was wondering if anyone else was thinking about a P4 - U2 drop-in. A light Op reflector and this LED would make a nice smooth midrange option!

Or is there something potentially wrong with my idea that I haven't though of? :shrug: Or is this LED way more inefficient than the Cree Q5?

The SSC's aren't as spiffy at really high currents and get a lot hotter than Cree's which starts turning them colors. That's why you rarely see them in high output lights unless they are super well heatsinked (ie. Malkoff)

Thank you for that bit of info! Heatsinking will have to be a top priority.

See I am so Cree'ed at this point I can't even remember that much about the P4's!

I have been considering SSC P4 myself because it throws better than Cree in a same-sized reflector. I prefer the neutral one (much less lumens) however because I value colour reproduction; at least U2SVOH/SUN/SUM if lumens is prioritised.

It also depends on the regulation; constant current is the top of my list, then driver efficiency.

Well I guess I will try to make one out of Ttran's 20 dollar "R2" drop-in.

Wish me luck, I'll most likley destroy everything trying this but I suppose I will learn a few things.

whats the forward current/voltage of the SSCP4 compared to Cree R2?... too much current and I think you'll just overheat it, and it will be dimmer (from thermal stress) than when run at a lower current. AFAIK, emitters are actually BRIGHTER when they are slightly under driven, due to the thermal element.

You're very very out of date. It was a few years ago with first batches of SSC P4 U bin. For a couple of years it's ok, P4's work fine driven at 1.2A. All LED lights need proper heatsink, no matter Cree or SSC. Both have 1A max current.

Vf of SSC is typically less than Cree besides SSC leds have selected Vf (xxxxH is 3,0-3,25V @ 350mA), Cree varies a lot (over 0,5V).

And this awesome smooth beam...

SSC P4's haven't updated their design, and still have the same inferior thermal characteristics. To this day a P4 driven hard without a massive heatsink will tint shift.

They are speced nearly the same because they both use Cree EZ1000 die, but the Cree package does a better job of dissipating heat.

Thats incorrect.This had been discussed in a thread or two a number of months ago.

SSC did change the construction process of the P4.It has something to do with the way the the die is bonded to the substrate.The newer version are not nearly as succeptable to the "angry blue" tint shift as the older version.

The XR-E's are better at handling heat at high overdrive levels,but at normal levels the P4's aren't inferior and dont have any tint shift issues.

That's what I said, and what is being discussed here. To get 200 lumens OTF from a P4 would mean overdriving quite a bit, at least 1A

1A is not overdriving,its spec.

The only way it would be damaging to the emitter is in an application where there is an inadequate thermal path to the body.And in that case,it would eventually be damaging to any emitter,not just the P4.

1000ma would equate to 240lm out the front for the P4.
