so i'm going to a "lantern tour" this saturday night. they implicity say "no flashlights." they give you a lantern to carry during the 2hr excursion(w/ bonfire break)

i'm all for the experience and i'm sure the lantern would set the mood right.
but what if someone gets injured and all 20+ ppl's cell phones fail simultaneously, who is gonna signal the rescue copter?

i guess a 1aa light for backup? light and reasonable output. i dont want to carry dead weight. waaa:mecry: i wanna showoff.. lol

bring something you can light up the place bright enough that people will be convinced their being bombed by white phosphor but keep it locked out, no one will here will tell;)

If I was in your shoes I would bring my MC-E'd L4:nana:

I bring a few "concealed" lights. For me that would an Aeon in my pocket and a M2 in my Torso Pak.

It's not dead weight, it's peace of mind. Just don't whip them out and break the rules. I'm willing to bet someone else will be pack'n!

I'd pack a HID?:nana: Seriously though take whatever you want just don't use it unless ya gotta?

Or take a hotwire to light your lantern :)

pretty much. do you have to use the lanterns they provide? if not, i'd use that as an excuse to make a last minute run over to rei. it'd be worth it if for no other reason than to rattle the sheeples in your excursion...

+1 vote for concealed carry... it cant hurt to be safe. Of course if you're ever alone where no one can see... let er' RIP!!

Wait until everything is real quiet . . . . :sssh:

Then, toss a rock (from yer' pocket), into the distance.

When it lands, it'll make a noise . . . .

Shout loudly: " What the Hell was THAT ? ? ? "

When the people start to panic in fear,

shine yer' BrightThrowMonster into the darkness.

Shout loudly: " Oh My God ! It's coming THIS WAY ! ! ! "

Carry whatever you like.

Should you, or any of your flashlights, be caught or killed, CPF will disavow any knowledge of your actions. :D

Lantern tour??? What is this...a mood setting romantic thing? Well OK! But be safe and go prepared. Carry at least one TK-40 or brighter in your backpack...just in case the romance thing gets out of hand :naughty:

Yea you never specified what kind of lantern tour and where!? But no matter, take something. Nobody will ever know unless you tell them or there comes a time when yall need it and theyre SOL but you have a REAL light :candle:

My suggestion: bring something in the tactical range (120-300 lumens) with north of an hour runtime, and bring something else that'll double as a directed-energy weapon (1000 lumen range; Roomsweeper or ROP). Keep them out of sight unless needed.

IAPW, this will be a pair of L4/E2 sized things that'll slip into a pocket. Just make sure you know which one you're grabbing. :D

it goes next to a chasm or in it. there better be guard rails.

Carry! :caution:

They can eat it. I will pack a light wherever I please.
I will be curteous enough to not use it and spoil the ambiance and low light adapted vision that sets the scene for ghost tours and the like. I am very easy to get along with. But if I, or someone else, really really needs it then out it comes.

I am 100% sure some jackhole will be waiving one around shortly into it anyway.

Not a problem - the copter will see the light from those lanterns. Basically any lantern will outshine any phone, BTW.

And I won't start my rant about the urban myth that rescue copters will appear magically out of thin air within seconds of anything bad happening, like Peter Pan or Superman. It's hard, but I promise not to start ranting. Not this time.

No, what you REALLY need the light for if something bad happens is as a valuable resource to DO SOMETHING about it. Assess the damage, make the most out of the resources available, first aid or whatever is necessary. If you're a firm believer in rescue copters (even if they're our most valuable search and rescue asset, they do have their limitations) you probably want to find a landing place and mark that spot. Since 20 phones magically stopped working all of a sudden (a more like scenario being out of cell coverage) you may even send some runners to call for the cavalry. (Quick run = light needed).

A more likely scenario is that the light may prove its worth if someone drop their car keys or whatever...

i guess a 1aa light for backup? light and reasonable output.

That's what I would carry. Plenty bright enough for almost everything anyone could need a light for. Small enough for no one (particulary YOU) to notice it's even there. And no one is going to give a ___ about what you carry in your bag or pockets unless you flaunt it.

And - you want to bring a SMALL light so you can concentrate and enjoy the tour and camp fires, NOT spend 2 hours thinking about how absolutely stunned (and mad!) everyone would be for you to show off your maximegasuper lightsaber.

waaa:mecry: i wanna showoff.. lol

You'll get your chances, my friend... you'll get your chances.

+1 on the 1xAA (either my Jetbeam Jet I Pro IBS v2.0 or Led Lenser P5), i'd bring an E01 or LD01 along as a back up too.

so this bonfire thing, is the fuel going to be the lanterns carried in?? Note that i am thinking along the lines of the Chinese Lantern Festival which traditionally used to be (in Singapore in the 1970s) wax frames with coloured cellophane paper in various shapes, animals and all that with a small candle in the centre to light it from within and carried balanced on a tiny wooden rod.

Many accidents would occur when candles would tilt and set the lanterns on fire and seeing tiny kids of whom i was one then, running around with blazing wire and cellophane creations was simultaneously frightening and amusing especially when i was less than 9 years old.

When we got older, at the end of the evening, we would gather all the lanterns into a pile and light 'em up in a bonfire :D

Now its all plastic inflatable lanterns with battery powered bulbs, boring!

you'll know you met a CPF member when ...

don't "try it out" around the woods or you might accidentally expose a pair of lovebirds wanting their privacy for certain matters...then things could really get out of hand. Tried this very scenario first hand by playing with throwers on an outskirt of a parcel frequently traveled by mudder/offroading civilians. They first thought it was the police then turned around and started driving their jeeps my way :duck:

Whenever I'm around places where there are tree lines over different distances...I have this itch to unlock everything in and shine around:crackup:

I would say carry a small, but bright flashlight for emergencies. Scr** the rules, personal safety over rides all guidelines. But remember to be polite, don't just take it out to show it off. Unless you hit a treacherous stretch of trail:whistle:
