Did I actually blind that fly???

The flies will be here soon enough...its still winter here but its already gotten pretty warm...we've already had a few days around 25C/77F!
 
I won't be impressed until someone makes one spontaneously combust....

As I’ve posted somewhere else already when I first tested my 1000 watt Can light: When I turned it on for the first time I set it up on my porch and walked down the street to see how far away I could see the beam in the night sky. On the way back up the stairs to my porch I saw smoke coming from my light:eek:, I rushed over to see what had set on fire, It wasn’t my light:duh2:…..hundreds of flying insects had been attracted to the light and the moment they touched the surface they instantaneously set on fire:drool:. So there were tons of dead burning bugs on the lens literally producing so much smoke I could see it 20 feet away:sick2:!

I've also observed some very odd fly behavior associated with flashlights, and it has proven repeatable on several occasions so I thought I'd share. :tinfoil:


If you've got a fly inside your house and you can't seem to run that ******* down to kill it, just pull out your EDC, turn it on and place it in a spot you don't mind fly guts getting splattered on. Ideally you want to do this in close proximity to a recliner and your beer. If you don't have one, go grab one or pour yourself a drink and have your flyswatter ready at hand. By the time you've gotten back, the fly will have landed directly in front of the torch, staring at it!! It seems to work best with around 200+ lumens. Contrary to the recent popularity of warm/neutral emitters, Musca domestica definitely prefer the cool white bins! I've done this three or four times now and it never fails. True story! :p
 
I have converted several members of the general population into light enthusiasts by using flashlight beams to play with bugs.

Especially fun is medium size moths outdoors. If you catch them at the right angle, you can pin them to the ground whereupon they spastically flutter about in place, unable to move out of the beam. Click off, and they fly away as if nothing ever happened.

If you get them from underneath and then quickly point the light straight up, they will ascend amazingly fast, following the beam STRAIGHT UP until it is sufficiently disperse, then "escape" and fly back down. You can even have "moth tweezing" contests. (Be sure to give your opponent a big, floody light and keep the small, unassuming thrower for yourself. They can't figure out why they keep losing. :nana:)

I wonder how many watts of laser power it takes to knock a fly outta mid-air...
 
I keep wondering about a targetted laser to deal with flies - Would need to be quite powerful for the short duration of exposure.

I have killed a cockroach with a Mag85R, it took a few seconds and wasn't pretty - it ended up 'dead bug' style with its feet in the air.
