I've never seen a DVD-RW diode with the casing positive, though its possible I'd bank on it being negative. I've acctually never seen a diode of any kind with a positive casing... though I wont say there arent some out there, it just goes against hte apparent wiring standards.
in this case the case was negative. Thanks for the help. I got the thing up and running although I hate having to focus the red from near to far. that and I gots a scratch on my lens (plastic) from the spring inside that is spacing it from the diode.
Grats!!
pics? experiments? what's the source? I'm ripping one out of a 20x DVD burner I bought, should be comming any day now. Will put them up once I get the Aixiz module to house the diode in.
I didn't mean to imply anything rude, if you misconstrued my post I appoligize, All I meant was that I personally had never heard or seen a diode with a positive casing, I'll watch my wording int he future, again, I'm sorry.
Ok I'll work on pics. I need to find a permenant home for it. Might work well in the nerfaser but having to focus it constantly is not a good thing. When I get done with it I will defentily post pics and a movie of it burning black electrical tape. It SMOKES IT! Doesn't really penetrate for the longest time but in the meantime it puts out a lot of smoke. Most amazing thing I can do with it is clean my hand.
I'll explain. sharpie your finger and aim the focused laser at your finger where the dot is. Smoke soon begins to issue forth from your finger and you get a feeling of confusion as there is not heat associated with all of the smoke. It continues to smoke and smoke eventually burning off all of the ink on your finger and the most you feel is a slight increase in temperature on your finger tip. Damnedest thing ever. I like to burn my finger for a split second to see the amount of power it puts out and i tried it with the new dvd burner I put together to see how good it was. I think that it's cause of the scratches I have on my optics that decrease the output power enough to not burn me. who knows.
Kenom - that is the oddest thing I think I have ever heard ! By the way, I got your package today...will be able to work on it most likely around Wednesday or so. A good tip to keep in mind when working with these aixiz modules - if you remove the spring - you can wrap a piece of teflon tape around the focusing module, and it will provide enough tension to keep the focus from slipping all the time ! That, and think about simply focusing the module to "infinity" - or point it allll the way across a big room, and focus it as small as possible for that distance. Then you won;t have to mess with it, until you want to burn with it again
Once I get it mounted SenKat, you can be assured I'm sending it down to you for testing to find the output power of this.
Ok, here's how I'm gonna mount it. I'm in love with this idea and I'm so totally stoked to see the finished product. EEEEEEEE!!!
Mini-mag 2AAA flashlight. Remove the default light and solder longer stiffer pins to the Diode assembly off of a normal LED. Pictures in the works as I type.
From there I insert the module into the head of the Maglite.
I've got to refine the idea a bit to include the lens assembly for the maglite onto the focus ring so that I can focus the laser. will probably use hot glue to mount it temporarily.
Next step will be retrofitting the tailcap with a switch so that I can push the button on the bottom and make it come on.
