hello i recently received a 2d maglite by way of a donation and its crying out for a mod of some kind to do it justice . Do i go the led route or do i go with an incan mod of some description thats not to complicated. Most of my other lights are led based so it would be nice to have an incan lamp in my collection . Any advice thankfully received .lol cliff

The most important part you have to let us know is how much you want to spend on the mod :D? And maybe if you want to have a really high performance flashlight or a flashlight with a long runtime.

I have looked at this and am building several 2D lights right now:

1) P7 / Britelumens heatsink / Taskled d2Flex controller / 3 C NiMH or Alkalines in a PVC pipe sleeve with small or modified spring. 5 or 8 levels of P7 floodlight, focusable. Stock lens and reflector or upgrade to LOP/MOP for nicer beam pattern.

2) With mdocod or FM 6xAA holder and KIU bipin socket kit run a WA1164 hotwire. This is a modest overdrive, really simple mod. Requires lens and reflector upgrade.

3) Bored to take 8xAA holder (wquiles or others do the boring), will run WA1185 hotwire to 9.6V (not overdriven) but a very nice reliable incan. Use KIU base bipin socket and one of the 6xAA holders from mdocod or FM. Also can run the WA1164 bulb on this, pretty hot overdrive though. Requires lens and reflector upgrade.

I already did a 2D with a Malkoff devices 2/3D drop-in, very nice. This can be done with either a 2D/3D drop-in, and 2D alkaline/NiMH, or a 6xAA holder and a 4-6D drop-in with 6 AA Eneloop NiMH cells.

Another option is to set it up for an ashperic lens for super throw. Best to use a Cree R2 / heatsink setups for that, or possibly a Cree Q5.

hello again here are some guidelines regarding mods 1 budget about £100 tops 2 beam quality ,some throw with some spill already got several lights that produce near 250 lumens so set that as a benchmark ,not to bothered if i loose the focus facility if need to replace reflector and lens . 3 battery performance ,i would like a run time of about an hour or so to attain this i know battery mods are gonna be essential . I use rechargeables in most of of my current lights atmo so that side is covered . Lol cliff

My favourite 2D (I have 3 of them) is my ROP Low with 2 x D Li-ion cells, OP aluminium reflector and glass lens. It would be about 500 Lumens and runs for around 2 hours on fully charged batteries. The light is nice with good whiteness, 10x as good as the sickly yellow weak beam from the standard krypton bulb.

If you want simple, and decent output...hard to beat the ROP. There are too many other choices to narrow it down once you get into bored out tube, LED vs. Incans.

Better to say what you want to use it for.
