What do you get when you cross a Carley 3" parabolic reflector with a 123 battery tube? Whatever it is, it's not for EDC!
NewEDC.jpg

I wanted to answer once and for all what really works better in a reflector, SE, LD, or HD, before I start turning my own reflectors (since the reflector will be tuned to the emitter). I had a Carley 3" parabolic, threaded it to fit my standard 1W BB400 emitter module, then attached a 123 battery tube that also works with this module.

The beam (shots will have to await nightfall) is about what you get with 30mm optics, only compressed to about one-third of the diameter, with the intensity boosted proportionally ... plus significant side spill.

It's definitely a thrower, though perhaps not a keeper!

Just think....."If you lived in the east, it would be dark NOW!!"

If you ever decide not keeping it....well...you know what to do with it. We have a nice B/S/T area from what i've heard. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Holy Crap!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: Don\'t Laugh

Why am I laughing; I'm shouldn't be doing that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow, that's like the guy who designed the Legend LX got to make it his way! Very nice. The beam shots should be very interesting....

Beam Shots

Here's the KL1 and Blaster II on top, and the Carley 3" reflector with LD and HD on bottom taken on off white wall at 15 feet.
KL1BlasterIILDHD.jpg

The hotspot on the LD measures 16". The hotspot with an HD is tighter (12") and more uniform. The HD doesn't appear by eye to have the "blazing" central hotspot of the LD, but it certainly appears brighter in the picture. What can't be seen here is the wide side spill of the LD and even more so with the HD.

Notes: 1) The focus is completely adjustable. I adjusted for the tightest hotspot. 2) The reflector was polished by myself to get rid of Carley's tool marks and oxidation (6 years old). It is by no means mirror-like. 3) The reflector is only catching the weak half (45 to 90 degrees off axis) of the emitter's output.

Nice light, Otokoyama. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

After I got over my laughter...well kinda got over my laughter; my serious nature took over. I keep trying to warn you guys and some of you have got the message.

Look at the pics these ModMen display with a careful eye.

Please note that in the first comparitive pic the reflections in the reflectors. They clearly show a five story, orange-brick building with stairwell. Now look a little closer at the first pic with the C3PO on the right. See the three-heading being? Uh huh. Coincidence you say? Well then, how come no dust or fingerprints? How come the background is a black hole? How is that possible?

Now, scroll down. No, no, no don't scroll back up. It can see you. I gotta go now. Lambda has already "arrived", I think I saw an Area 51 Skunk and Mr. Bulk is about to get "off work".

bad!

very nice!

that beam is so very sexy!!!

Re: Beam Shots

Otokoyama,

Very nice! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif If you E-mail me your address, I'll send you a small amount of Flitz metal polish or you can get some yourself. I think you'll be amazed at how well and quickly it will polish up the reflector. It will be interesting to see what you get with a SE in that reflector. I have a 1W SE in a 3" SF "T" head and its tight little beam out throws most of my 5W's.

Re: Beam Shots

yes...a side emitter! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

hey don...where do you get your flitz? i can't find any locally /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Beam Shots

Roth,

I get it from a marine distributing company I used to manage. I first encountered it in the '70's at a motorcycle trade convention so I would assume some of the cycle shops might handle it as well as marine supplys. The stuff is pricy but a little goes a long way.

Re: Beam Shots

thanks...a marine shop is somthing that i will never see in iowa /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

if you are interested in getting rid of some, maybe we could work out a deal?

btw...this works well for plastics also correct?

Re: Beam Shots

Wenol is a legit alternative to Flitz - I've used both and like 'em both. (And yes they are good on many hard plastics and paints ... )

Re: Beam Shots

My local Galyans has Flitz. Many knife shops and sporting goods stores carry it usually in the knife sharpener area.

Simichrome polish is a similar smelling and acting product. It is pink instead of bluish probably for marketing ID purposes. I have used both and the function the same to my untrained eye.

I don't remember if Brasso works on AL or not?

Re: Beam Shots

Icebreak: If I was able to polish the reflector properly, you'd be able to tell exactly what's in the reflection. Sorry to disappoint you, but the "three-headed being" is one head plus two arms holding a camera.

McGizmo: Thanks for the Flitz offer. That's exactly what I used on the final polish. There were relatively deep circular tool marks in the reflector left when it was initially milled/turned. I'm not sure if I didn't use 600 grit long enough, or if I need some finer grits before using the Flitz.

SE results depended on focus. The brightest focus gave me a bright square (the die? did I imagine bars?) with a halo around it. I couldn't find any satisfactory focus that was bright, tight, round, and uniform.

This does outthrow the two 5W lights that I have.

Rothman, you really need to get out more. While we don't have any oceans near by us here in Iowa, the Mississippi River is only a few miles away. We have boats, boat shops, docks, fishing gear, all that stuff. And this is the best time of year to visit them, as the water here has actually turned back from glass to liquid form, and the marine shops are open again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
