I hate to burst my own bubble, but as a childhood member of the League of Junior Scientists, I must: the variations in the output of the various 1AAA Dorcies (Dorcys? Dorci?) are most likely due to the variations in the LEDs themselves. The contributions of the lens (there IS a slight curvature) and reflector are minor. You can test this by removing the heads as Lurker has (you can also use channelock pliers if you wrap one of those rubber jar-opening discs around the head first-- then it's easy) and comparing your Dorcies in "candle" mode. Or simply rotate (unscrew) the head while the light is on and see what changes.

If anyone can spot differences in LEDs by eye, I'd like to learn the technique.

Has anyone tried solvents (acetone, xylene) to very lightly frost an LED? Alternatively, a dulling spray such as is used in TV work, or even hairspray? I've a mind to go in the opposite direction first and try the polishing compound that comes with CD scratch repair kits..
