Are these batteries actually any better than a normal duracell?

Oops, if the Ultras are lithium, I made a mistake. ACMarina is correct in that lithium AA cells have worthwhile advantages in some applications. Besides better performance in high drain uses, they usually don't leak and the electrolyte won't destroy contacts and aluminum bodies.

I thought the Ultra was only a nuanced change from their regular alkaline cells but at a premium price.

Well, and the Lithium cells are lighter, which makes a big difference in many cases.. the best example is the Eternalight, which will float with lithium AAs and sink with alkalines.

Additionally, lithium cells stand up to temperature extremes better. Alkaline batteries don't work as well in extreme cold or heat, whereas the lithium cells stand a much better chance of doing their thing. Really a plus for changing a tire at night in the winter..

I'm pretty sure it is alkaline. I'm not really sure what the difference is.

Maybe I'll just pick up a pair of the energizer lithium AA's to test out in the L2D-CE.

I wish FLR would get runtime charts up for this torch.

Silverfox from this site has a comparison on a number of alkaline batteries at http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=64660 that will probably answer your questions. If I recall the Ultra's are listed in there and also compare to the performance of Costco's Kirkland brand of alkaline batteries.

FLR is semi-retired, right?? I wouldn't be waiting there - I'd be looking towards Craig at the LED Museum for stuff for the most part..
