I will be offering Don's cool ECan.

This little housing will host numerous converter boards and will fit many 123 based flashlights for easy modifications.

The ECan can replace the cathode + delrin + rivet assembly in the McLux. With some additional tops the ECan can fit into the E series flashlights and others like the PM6, the Harbour Freight and others.

While many combos have not been tested the ECan solves one of the many obstacles in the modders work.

My first usage of an ECan will be to host a BB500 and glue it to the back of a Hotlips heatsink. This will mate the ECan to the Hotlips and the LED wires will pass from the ECan through the holes in the Hotlips to get to the LED side.

It would be great if you would offer thermal RTV silicone for potting the E-Cans on your shoppe as well. It would be a big waste for most people to buy a big tube just to pot a few E-Can. Maybe you can sell a 6 gram syringe of these that Don uses.
 
I like potting my boards in Arctic Alumina. The E-can looks ideal for a variety of projects, i think i might pick up a few to use in my attempt to make a Surefire P** LA LED drop in.

I am not sure I would be comfortable using just thermal RTV in potting the Ecan. I say this because the compression load of the battery train wants to push the PCB through the Ecan. I have been putting a bead of crazy glue in the lip of the Ecan and then gluing the PCB against this inner lip. It may be that this is a strong enough bond. However, I have then potted the PCB with epoxy as I am confident there will be no compression issues with this method.

Another comment on the Ecan. You will likely need a ground or common wire soldered to the can. This should be attached prior to installing the PCB. I have been heating the can until solder will flow and then putting a ball of solder on the inside cylindar wall, about halfway down. To this ball of solder, I attach a ground wire. This works but is a bit of a PITA. I think I will start drilling a small hole through the side of the can and soldering the ground wire through this hole. A quick trim and filing of the wire where it sticks out of the can should finish off the job. The can has a recessed counter bore that can be also used as a solder ledge. In some cases, this counter bore will be wanted for receiving a centering plug on the back side of the heat sink or pedestal. As time and new ideas come up, hopefully different applications can be photographed and shared by the forum members.

You bring up a good point, I would use Alumina epoxy around the pcb edge to bond it with the E-can wall first, then fill the space up with thermal RTV. A better choice of filling would be Arctic Alumina, but that can get expensive. Can't wait to get some E-cans, I have a few projects that would work great with them.
 
I've been using Alumina powder mixed in with regular epoxy to make my own thermal bog.

While this is not as good as AA Adhesive, I'm sure it is better than thermal RTV. I will be offering 1/2 oz or 1 oz of the powder on the shoppe at the same time with the Ecans.

The price will be $1.00 for a small ziplock bag of the stuff.

I need to contact the MFG of the RTV and see how much I can get it for.

There are a lot of items I want to add to the store. Right now I'm somewhat over-extended in working capital and have to watch what I buy.

I'm not sure about re-packaging it and how well that will work or how much effort that will be.

Don, if you drill anyway, then why not tap and use a ground screw (from the inside, after the board is pressed down) alá McModule/McLux? Or better yet, have'em made this way henceforth?

charlie, i agree about the screw. i've done this in quite a few of my heatsinks, and find it to be the best way to ensure a good ground. the only problem is it adds to the size...a key issue here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
(do you have a 90degree screwdriver btw? i think it would be might hard to screw from the inside...)

You could possibly use a small pan head screw that will accept a small allen or hex key wrench to screw from the inside.

i was actually thinking about milling 2 small slots, so there is a "pole" sticking out. wrap the wire aruond the pole and solder it in place...
 
Since the E-Can is made of brass (it looks like brass), it's relatively soft. For all practical purposes, you could just drill a hole in the side of it and friction fit a piece of a small nail to solder the ground wire to.
 
Man, I can't wait till these things hit the shoppe. I did my first simple mod today. I replaced the LS in my KL1's with R2's and Q3's. Now I've got the bug bad. I waiting to see what I can do with this and a Q3J with the Harbor Freight 1x123 light. I have access to a lathe and a milling machine. No turning back now.
