Emergency! may have had a major impact on my life!

P.S. - The picture is me, with Randolph.

I was judging the EMS competition, at the JEMS National EMS conference in Baltimore, when during a break he walked over and asked if we'd (judges) like to have our pictures taken with him, that was a no brainer!


The best part was how nice a guy he was, shook all of our hands and talked with us until the competition started up again.

I replied "is a bullfrog waterproof?"

I remember watching this as a youngster, I've also got the Season 1 DVD boxset, and I also watched a similar series called '240-Robert' about the LASD Search and Rescue Paramedic team.

Little did I know at the time that I'd spend my last 10 years as an LEO on an Air Support Unit!

Totally forgot about this show. Did they have a Machine they attached to the patient and that information went to the hospital for doctors to look at or am I thinking of something else.

You remember correctly!

They used a Biophone to talk to and send telemetry to the ER

In my early days (early 1980's) we used an APCOR (made by Motorola) to do the same.

APCOR stood for Advance Portable Coronary Observation Radio

I was glad to see "Dr Mike Morton" get a speaking role, then go from the not shown in credits to the small print characters to the "also starring" page by the end of season 1.

And that Dr Bracket sure was a snappy dresser with all of those tight fitting striped polyester pants. But to me the biggest surprise was what terrible attitudes many of the 'victims' had. What a bunch of spoiled brats. Sheesh!!

I'm at season 2 now. One scene caused me to chuckle. As the policeman got into his cruiser he put on a motorcycle crash helmet and when he arrived at the scene he removed it and got out of the car……without removing a seatbelt because he did not wear one. Nobody did even though by 1973 lap type seat belts were standard equipment.

Another scene the fireman was shining the lantern down into a hole to spot the trapped kid and the little red lamp on the rear was flashing. lol. They were like 50 yards from traffic. No seat belt but make sure to turn on your 4 lumen red flashing light.

What a treat to go back in time. I was 8 or 9 when the show first began. To know the 1940's 2aa Eveready doctor light with #222 bulb was still relevant……until the 1990's……

Dr Bracket style flashlights were actually pretty bright considering……

Finishing up the Emergency box set, including 6 featurette short movies at the end I realized a few things:
- people were just as ridiculous back then. Maybe worse as a matter of fact.
- the men wore really tight jeans.
- nobody wore Vans in LA, Seattle or San Fransisco
- Vegas and Pintos out numbered Hondas, Toyotas and Datsuns by a huge margin.
- 1960's cars were still plentiful
- Roy looked really stupid with slick back hair.
- Dr Bracket was a real snappy dresser with his mis match striped pants, striped dress shirts and loud ties.
- They rode past the same house and same doo doo brown Mustang in a bunch of different episodes.
- They drove down the wrong side of the road a lot.
- The air was REALLY REALLY polluted back then.
- They wore crash helmets when driving but not seat belts.
- The Coast Guard was awesome back then.
- They never showed Roy's wife and kids.
- One episode Boots was just gone. What happened to boots?
- Dr Mike Morton never made it past the "and featuring" list.
- They had a lot of up and coming actors.
- Johnny never did get the girl……
- And while all the others nurses wore skirts Dixie wore pants.

- They never showed Roy's wife and kids.

I will say, that at least in the areas I work/ed, people/things/calls have gotten much more ridiculous, then when I started in 1979.

If I remember correctly, they showed Roy's wife (Joanne) in the first/pilot episode, which I believe was the only time.

I need to watch the series again, as it has been a long time for me.
