I've been having some fun(?) reading through some of the recent Sanyo patents, as I've been curious what makes LSD cells LSD.
Sounds like there may be a gel electrolyte involved, but the main thing I'm seeing in several patents is a rare-earth-hydride and cobalt-(hydride or oxide) layer being added to the NiOH plate. Seems to help even when it is UNDER the active NiOH layer.
There are also some improvements in the Hydrogen storage alloy electrode, I think one about a different formulation and another about adding Germanium.
Main effects are to raise the oxygen generating potential (preventing oxygen generation) at one plate to prevent that spontaneous self-discharge reaction. The other is to reduce corrosion of either plate by the KOH electrolyte.
