Just wondering if anyone will be interested in some AA to D adaptors for maglites and stuff. I will be making these out of delrin plastic. I recently discovered a good source for this stuff, and also picked up a tap and die kit, for threading the delrin rods. Once I begin production the prices would be around:

-$15 (shipped worldwide) per high current 6AA to D adaptor (made using black delrin plastic, bolts / washers, and solid copper wire. Probably be $3-5 more per AA to D.
-$4 shipped per AA dummy and $6 shipped per D dummy. Copper will likely be used.

Prices are give or take $2-3.

Can anyone think of anything else they would like to see made using derlin plastic (this stuff is great! Very strong yet reasonable flexible). I can get anything from about 4mm's wide to 10cm's wide. I can also get sheets of the stuff. This stuff would be available in a week or less.

In my experience, building a 4AA>1D serial adapter that fits inside of the 60mm space restriction (or close to it) of a D cell, is very difficult. I've experimenting with numerous ways to do it and always end up closer to 70mm length. The lack of custom fasteners for the end caps is really the determining factor.

I might be able to simply modify a 8AA battery holder to make it fit into a mag. What would be the max width it could be?

for cells to fit 4 abreast in a mag, generally speaking the adapter must have the cells quite literally touching side to side, perfectly arranged in a square. Some cells fit without boring (tight), many require boring, any added diameter to the configuration by having plastic between the cells separating them will usually make the adapter too large to fit. Then there is the challenge of the wiring, in 4 abreast configurations, the terminations are both on the same end of the adapter, so the power needs to be transmitted to the opposite end through a rod or something, this complicates things. I've built working prototypes from various rods, but nothing that is all that sturdy and worthy of sales, if you come up with something that can be done cheap and easy, I'll applaud that! Once you start prototyping I'm sure you'll see where a lot of the challenges and hurdles pop up that must be overcome. It's tough stuff :)

jason, I would be interested in a delrin tube that converts 2D to 2x18650. There might not be enough interest to make a run of them, but I would be interested to buy one off of you if you would make it.

I'll look into doing that...

Also I think I will be able to come up with some 4AA to 1D and 8AA to 2D adaptors.

There are some manufactured ones that I think I can buy, the only thing is they are for low current applications (like ~10W's or less). I would need to modify it for high current, and to fit into a mag. I'll keep this thread updated.

An update:

I have come up with a 4AA to 1D manufactured adaptor that currently is 57x30x30mm (this size includes 4 Sanyo AA's). Diagonally it measures ~37mm. So I would like to know the width diagonally from one bore to another in a mag.

When finished it will likely be 62-65mm long (length wise, this would be no problem the spring would just be a little more compressed)

something like 33.5mm (can't remember exactly) give or take depending on the mag. A set of 4 cells that are precisely 14mm in diameter that are positioned all touching each-other snugly will have a diameter of 33.8mm and will sometimes fit in some mags. Usually it requires that the cells be slightly slimmer than 14mm or that the mag be unusually large internally. Remember, a D cell is supposed to be 32mm diameter, so ~33mm internal diameter is all they really need for there to be some clearance.

Is there anyone else that would be interested in a 2D to 2x18650 adaptors? The more interested, the lower the price, so please post with interest. Once I see at least 2-3 interested people, I'll need to go out and buy the right size drill bit so I can begin production.

The price would be ~$12-15 shipped depending on how many are interested.

Also, I'm still working on a design / prototype for both 4AA to 1D / 8AA to 2D as well as 2D to 6AA etc. I'll continue to update this thread. Please continue to post with interest.

I'm interested in just about any adapter that can be made...I'm an equal opportunity buyer when it comes to things related to this hobby. I just got some good adapters from MDOCOD. If you make some cool 3AA-to-1D/6AA-to-2D/9AA-to-3D/etc adapters, I'd probably be interested in those too. As for LiIon adapters, that sounds like a good idea...x18650-to-xD or xCR123-to-xD would be good ideas I suppose. Definitely interested in 4AA-to-1D and 8AA-to-2D for when I get some bored out Mags.

Ok well first to come will be 2x18650 to 2D adaptors. Then 3-4 CR123A to 2D.

The next item I'll have available after the 18650 adaptors will probably be 3AA to D adaptors then the 4AA to D will follow.

A few 18650 adaptors should be available by this weekend, so stay tuned! :)

Jason, I just thought of another thing you could probably cash in on. There could be a decent market for a 2x 18650 battery holder (in series) that fit in the M6. That way the M6 would be easily rechargeable and be able to use MN20, MN15, MN16, N2 lamps.

An update on the 18650 to 2D adaptors. I made one, and it works just fine, but because of the length of the 18650's, it is going to require the stock mag spring to be cut down. Otherwise it is extremely difficult to screw the cap on.

I'll hopefully have pictures up as well as prices by late Saturday or Sunday.

Also would there be any interest in a 1D to 18650 adaptor? How about a 3D to 18650? Post with interest...

@ leukos, could you (or anyone else) provide me with dimensions of the M6 tube diameter and length? Maybe also some info on the spring size as well? Then I'll look into a 2x 18650 battery holder. Also with only 2x 18650's in a 6x123a light, there should be plenty of room for a nice charging jack.

Thanks!

-Jason

PS: If anyone has any more idea's of anything they would like to see made out of this plastic, please post.

FM's holder is 34.5mm diagonally with eneeloops and the measurement diagonally from bore to bore is 35mm, the same as the tail cap thread. I'm not quite understanding how you can fit 37mm in the mag.
I'm in for one if in fits through the tail threads. PP locked and loaded.
