Fenix E1 sagging question

Sent an E1 to a freind in a foreign land. Of late when she turns it on, it starts bright and "sags" to much dimmer, even with fresh batts in.

Diagnosis, Flashlight Doctors?

1) alcohol swabs on the contacts
2) sounds like carbon zinc behavior. please tell me she's not using alkaline or carbon zinc in that light....

If none of those above work, try to get a replacement for her. The newer E01 is also coming out.

Most likely regular alkaline batteries or maybe the ni-cads I sent her . I didn't realize there was a potential problem with using alkalines.

alkaline batteries are fine in the E1, I've been using them in mine for a very long time with no issues, sounds like a dead cell or maybe a dirty contact.
you're 100% sure the cells are good?

Also make sure she's not using "Super Heavy Duty" cells.
