Just a quick note here guys about a new arrival to my manly torch stable. Thanks to Ray (Kid9P) over at CPFMP, I now have a nice round body 6P with a new Malkoff M61. I compared it directly with my new style Surefire 6P/M60 combo.

Now both emitters are lottery winners (in my opinion) and the tint is very comparable. I took a few quick pics showing the obvious size difference of the older style 6P host and the new style. I must admit, I had no idea that the 6P roundy was so small.:D

I can tell you that the 6P roundy is a very nice host to handle and with the reduced size, is very pocketable. It would be great if Surefire still made the old style 6P but with a Pyrex window!! Anyway, Ray kindly fitted a new Lexan lens to this one so I will just have to be very careful with it.

With regard to the output comparison of the M60 and M61 emitters, the best way I can describe it is "chalk & cheese". The M60 with its' focused hot spot is a nice thrower, the M61 less so. I would describe the M61 as a cross between an M60 and an M60 MC-E - a very nice compromise. I always loved the floody nature of the M60 MC-E. With the M61, I still have a nice (very wide) floody beam but with some throw as well!:twothumbs

I always thought the beam of my Ra Clicky 140Cn was wide but the M61 flood beam is at least 30% wider again - awesome!

I think anyone with an M60 & M61 pretty much has most of their lighting requirements fulfilled (unless you want/need a super thrower).

Re: Malkoff M60 v Malkoff M61

What really gets me is the fact that the emitter isn't driven hard enough to call for that brass housing.

It's complete overkill to have such good heatsinking for something that quite literally doesn't generate heat.

I would say I prefer the M60 but Gene makes several different styles I guess it depends on your use. Good products. When and will the M60 be available again. I need another one???

I've heard the M60 will again be available after Gene has sorted out the M61 backlog.

The M60 is still a great product with the superior throw. I agree with others sentiments - the M61 is better for close to medium use with a smoother beam. For longer range stuff, the M61's mildly focused hotspot runs out of steam pretty quickly. The M60 simply throws better.

I went for a run last night with the M61 and was impressed by the sheer size of the ring of light - nice & smooth.

The M60 will still remain part of my collection.

Dang I need to get my hands on an M61!
It's kind of embarassing that I don't have one yet. Still it would be cool to hold out for an M61L......................

I also have both of these beauties and I love them. Both are quite different animals. I use my 6P with M60 on 2 RCR123s for work and my MD2 with M61 on an 18650 with hi/lo ring for the pad/shelf queen. Jimmy you have to throw on Moddoos Z59 clip on that 6P looks great with the Xeno SS bezel.

I'm holding out for a w version, but I have the strange feeling I might be waiting a LONG time. :mecry:

I was going to hold out for a W version but chose to get this one. The tint is really great - none of the horrible blue/purple tint of previous drop ins I have bought (including a couple of M60's).

The reports I have read from others regarding tint have been mostly positive with only a few reports of a slightly green tint in some M61's.

I think the M60 and M61 are two different animals, as well.

If you are looking for throw, the M60 is it. It doesn't appear available any longer. Fortunately, there are other good drop-in's with throw available. The M61 is a great combo of flood and throw.

I would really like to see a M61L and M61LL or something like it in the 5-9 hour runtime category with the beam profile of the M61. Surefire's P60L really has a great smooth beam to it. A Malkoff M61L or LL would be like a brighter Surefire P60L with twice the runtime.

The M60LF is currently on sale.

The beam pattern of an M61LL would make for an almost perfect task light, if a shade bright.

As it is, I have the Malkoff website staked out. It's one of the few things to make me consider getting an internet-capable phone. ::huh: D

Hi purelite,

The orange o ring came with the SS bezel ring - I'm about to add a picture of the late model 6P with the M61 - looks cool!

Sweet pictures James

Now I'm missing that 6P/M61 combo so much more, thanks ;)
The tint is really nice on that M61, perfect to my eyes.

I do occasional freelance security patrol covering a large park type
area at night. I need the throw and I usually carry my M30/18650
combo.

But I do love the smaller size of the older 6P's. Wish they would make
more myself.

Hi Ray,

Sorry about the 'torch reminder pics' - She's definately a keeper!

Hells yeah!! Or even better, M61WLL. I'm in the market for a close task light myself, but no real rush since I have my old trusty G2L.

I just hope we don't have to wait too long for the "LL" version of the M61. Doesn't matter, I'll have the $$$ when/if it's made. :twothumbs

It's complete overkill to have such good heatsinking for something that quite literally doesn't generate heat.

i don't see it as being that overkill. i have a Thrunite 1.5A XP-G lamp and a Decree XP-G driven at 1.5A and both generate their fair share of heat. whats nice about Gene's M61 is that the relative lack of heat reduces the drop in output once the lamp reaches its baseline operating temperature. second, the lack of multiple output levels kinda makes it difficult to push an emitter towards its max output while still appealing to people who want a simple, reliable light/lamp that covers a wide range of applications.

Head to the MarketPlace if you really need one. Both of my M60 drop-ins were purchased there. (Including one of Gene's earlier, handmade, versions.) Even slightly used, they're awesome! :twothumbs

I'm just saying, if he made an M61HO at 1.4A, it would still be as big a seller as his low output modules. The buyer should already be aware of the tradeoffs of having a harder driven emitter, especially if the module is listed as "High Output".

i'm fortunate enough to have a modded switch ring for a slightly brighter low mode so i would be all over the M61 if it were driven near max. however, this bad news was dropped on my head a couple weeks ago:
