Up until now, I was a diehard LED fan. I always felt incans were not superior. My incan experience was limited to lower powered incan lamps, like the E1E, HO-6 and P60.

But today, I got an M3 in the mail :faint:

Theres just something about the wall of light that thing puts out. :)

Now I'm hooked, and I'm trying to find a way to get an M6 now

After nearly 3 yrs of EDCing a Fenix L1P ............. I went for the best of both worlds.

............... another gratuitous A2 pic opportunity :sssh:

Yeah, the P90 is what taught me to love incans - there's something special about three-cell Surefires. (Including, ironically, the X80)

I have many of both.

LED and incans both have their advantages and uses. The key is not to struggle with "which one is better". Neither is better. It's all about what you are using it for. Incans will be around for a long time until LED colour rendition is perfected. And I think even after that.

The beauty if incans is how you can overdrive them and achieve very good efficiency. Take a 100W 12v bulb that puts out like 2,500 lumens. Overdrive that sucka to 15-16v, and your looking at 5000 lumens, or an efficiency of 50 lumens a watt (about 1/2 as efficient as the best LED's out there) but a hell of a lot cheaper.

You won't really "get" incandescents until you get something like a mag running a 100W 62138. When you turn on one of those, your jaw drops and the smile on your face is like a kid in a candy shop.

I mostly like LEDs for power and runtime.
but one of my favorite lights is my Laser Devices OP6. incan (toggle switch on/off).
Its built like a tank and I love the light. honestly I like it better than my Surefire E2E incan.

@ foxtrot29: exactly this is the way I look at this. Although I have incans mainly, I have some LEDs because of their compactness combined with long runtime, and still have decent output.
Of course I could take a Mag 3D, this one has decent output as well as decent runtime but.... to put it in your pocket will be a harsh job :D

I'm at the point of having two EDCs:

1. a Fenix P1D,
2. a SureFire E1e.

The first I use is the SF, has the battery in it died, I'll take the P1D and have more than 20 hours to go :grin2:

And of course I'll have the Lumens Factory bulb of 3,6V so I can use 16340s in it :)

@ kindred spirits: does your nick refer to our great Medwyn Goodall ???

I agree 100% - :twothumbs

Yeah - I have a 5000 Lumen torch (Fivemega Elephant II body, AW Incan driver, 64628 bulb, Fivemega Al reflector, Borofloat Lens, 4 x AW IMR 18650 Cells).

But then there is my everyday 'go to' incan - a Maglite 2D with ROP Low bulb and 2 x Li-ion D cells - good for a couple of hours runtime from rechargeable batteries and plenty of usable light. There is something to be said for a good 600 Lumen incan with a 2 hour run time and I really like the size, weight and ergonomics of the Mag 2D along with the nice simple forward clicky single mode UI.

Of course I also like my small but bright LEDs that slip easily into any pocket and have multiple levels without the light being all yellow and dull looking.

I'm going camping tomorrow, I'll take at least 4 LEDs and at least a couple of incans - whatever I need/want I'll have on hand.

The intentional and strategic use of incandescent light may serve to employ its plethora of wavelengths to reveal intrinsic aspects of an object that make viewing said object's image an almost titillating sensory experience.

I have a dorcy 3 MCP light. Is there something to compare this to, like a M6 or M4? it uses a 100w bulb and lasts 10 minutes.
