Flashlight for the wife, any ideas?

1st post here!

My wife is a school teacher, and therefore firearms and knives are strictly off limits. Right now she has a kubotan on her keychain, but I would like to replace that with a quality light. I think I would prefer an LED, but am open to different ideas.

The things I would really like are a crenelated (is that what it's called?) bezel, tail switch and a strobe mode. I would ideally like one where you can set the strobe mode to be the 1st mode it starts on when you hit the switch.

The idea I have in mind is to have something on her when she is going to her car at night, but easy enough for her to use (hence tail switch, not twist stuff).

Thanks in advance!

Perhaps the new Quark tactical flashlight.

Can be set up for Strobe in one mode,

and "your choice of brightness" in the other mode.

It's a nice Forward Clickie, also.

To add on to what Burgess said, the CPF8 discount coupon is available if you purchase from 4Seven's website.

When you're looking for crenelated bezel lights, they usually are not lady-like, if you know what I mean. If that's ok with you and your Mrs, I'll throw in my 2¢ by recommending the Nitecore Defender Infinity. 1xAA pocketable (I mean purse-able), crenelated but not overly aggressive, bright on 14500 rechargeable, hidden strobe (quick twist to activate). Available in stock black ano or silver (nickel). 😉

Then again, I hope you are not having a wrong idea of depending on lights as a self-defense tool....

The Surefire E2dl is the most kubotan-like light I know, but the Nitecore Defender Infinity is much more pocketable.

i think that for her purposes a 2xAA light would be better, when gripped it would extend beyond her hand a bit more than a 1xAA would.

Any of the 2xAA lights would work, Eagletac, Fenix all make great 2xAA lights. If the light is going to go into her bag, then a crenellated or assault bezel may not be too good an idea unless she doesnt mind it scratching stuff in the bag alternatively have it in a holster that is sewn or clipped in an easily accessible position.

I'd prefer to have the light on its own, rather than hanging on key chains etc, the keys may get in the way and hamper gripping the light

You can't beat a Maglite for sheer 'blunt force trauma' a P7 modified 3C cell would be an excellent solution (and just a little over 10"), no strobe admittedly but 900 Lumens in your face would be equally as disorienting, oh and you can also get a crenelated bezel for it too (just no tail cap control)

What's your price range? THAT will definitely help with your selection.

Thanks for the welcome! I looked up the Quark. I like it, but the twisty action may be too much for her.

This light looks pretty nice. I wonder if it would be long enough?

Yeah, I know it isn't the best for self-defense, but she is limited in her options.

She did go through an instructional class on how to use the kubotan and go for pressure points, so this should be ok anyway.

Thanks!

How about mace?

NDI:
Total length 95mm; Bezel Diameter 20mm; Tail Diameter 19mm

If you think crenelated bezel is more important than UI (which is slightly more complicated), check out Tiablo TL-1. It's nicknamed "The Teeth" (hint hint)

Yeah, I'd prefer mace, but it is also on the banned list.... 😡

What do you guys think of the Fenix PD30? Looks like the right size with crenelations (although small). I don't understand how the UI is being described. If it can be left in what is being called the turbo mode that may be what I'm after.

the Inova X5 is a pretty good choice actually, simpler the better.

When your around kids, you run the issue of having something sprouting legs. If one kid then stabs another with your crenelated bezel, what you have then is a lawsuit from the parent and music from overhead about school safety:ironic:
Its not an "if" scenario, its a "when" scenario:ohgeez:

PD30 is a nice and bright light. With the head tightened, it's turbo by default and soft click to activate strobe. Loosening head will give you the option of lower outputs and SOS.

I wouldn't call the head crenelated, it's more like a design consideration to ensure one can see if the light is activated when it's placed bezel down.

Another thing about most of the Fenix series is the lack of knurling, which some like it some like it not. And the last thing is it's 2 x CR123, would your Mrs like that? I'm sure it's not as portable as 1 x AA.

After doing some reading, I don't know that crenellations are all they are cracked up to be, so that may not be a big deal. The 123's should be fine. It would be in a purse with her keys unless she is using it. I was looking at either 2 x AA or 2 x 123 anyway, to more closely approximate the length of the kubotan she is used to carrying now.

The PD30 is my EDC light. Of my kubotan form factor lights, it is my favorite. (I just posted a thread about such lights, actually.) One of the features I like is the shallow crenellations of the bezel. They seem to be (intentionally or otherwise) designed for practicality when striking rather than as an over emphasized marketing gimmick.

W/r/t bezel crenellations, I think the width is much more important than the depth. For striking with a kubotan, bony areas are preferable over fleshy areas. It's the reduction of surface area contacting bone that offers the most benefit, since the force of the blow is concentrated in that area. When the light is held in an overhand grip so the thumb can activate the switch, the flashlight head is most likely to be used in a hammer strike, while poking/stabbing fleshy areas (e.g. the throat below the adam's apple or under the chin), the tail cap is more likely to be used.

Bear in mind that techniques for use of a kubotan for self defense range from very simple and effective to pretty complex (and effective). I judge design based on the usefulness for the simpler tactics. Other people may have different tactics in mind when considering the ideal design, so your mileage may very.

Edit to add: I've find it very easy to switch the PD30 on and to strobe mode in a single step similar to double clicking a mouse.

Looks like my question just got totally overlooked by OP. What is your price range? Lights can vary from $5 all to the way into the hundreds...or more.

if she only needs strobe then quark tactical could work fine.

the other mode is gotten by twisting the head. very simple. simpler in my mind than the half press/tapping thru all the modes in pd30. on quark, leave it tightened and click or press button for strobe. loosen the bezel only when one needs normal light.

i am suprised that teachers are not allowed to carry mace/batons/guns on their way out of the school. outside the premises in the parking lot. i understand that they are not allowed during classes but after school in the off hours on the way to the car too?

if there would be threats or possible need for one.. i´d make her carry one anyway. life and health is too important to loose by lack or preparedness, in my mind.

I would be more inclined to go with a green laser pointer and fry the little eyeballs out. Aiming can be a problem though. Get a 2 AAA version and can work as a kubotan.
1/4 of all school shootings were stopped by citizens with firearms before the police could arrive. Media does not like to report that.
