Folks,

A little over two years ago, I was looking for a new watch. My searching for a particular model was unsuccessful. I posted my ideal watch on a discussion group and lo and behold someone pointed me in the direction of a brand I never heard of and the watch of my dreams (Sinn Model 103 ST-SA UTC)

I am currently having a similar problem with finding the ideal flashlight. I thought that I would post my criteria and see if anyone has a suggestion of a flashlight that meets them. Here we go…

One or two AA batteries
Adjustable beam (wide/narrow: similar to Mini-mag)
Preferably turned on by rotating head of flashlight, tail click less desirable
If it has multiple levels only 2 or three are necessary: hi-lo or hi-med-lo.
Do not need strobe or flashing mode
Throw on hi would illuminate around 100 feet distance (at least); that is I would be able to make out an animal at that distance on a dark county road
Lumen above 150, 100 may be ok
Run time on high – the longer the better but  at least 2 hours
Anodized, stainless steel, brass equally acceptable
Does not need candle mode
Does not need to be able to stand on end
Does not need belt clip but would be ok
Lanyard would be a plus
Water resistant to 10 feet or more would be a plus

Thanks to all who make a suggestion. If someone succeeds in identifying my dream light I'll let you know. Once again, thanks for all who are willing to play with this one.

The focusable feature pretty much eliminates bulk of the options in the market, let alone an AA focusable twisty.

Unfortunately there are not many lights out there with the spot to flood feature. Also, because it is already controlling the flood with the twist, most lights that do sport this then feature a clicky. If you think about the mag, one annoying thing is that you lose your flood setting turning the light off.

I still think the Fenix E20 is a good option, but you should also check out the duracell daylite 2AA light even though it is only 80 lumens and also particularly the Coast LED Lenser P14. Uses 4AA, has spot to flood and three brightness modes. The only downsides that I know of to this light are that it is a bit thick for some people, coast is not the most respected brand, and that it is not regulated I think so it has long battery life but gradually dims with usage.

oooh, a romisen zoom light, neat. I definitely want to investigate this light further.

I personally don't think flood to spot is usefull, partyally because of all the artifacts in the beam in spot mode, and the fact that I never use it. Ledlenser has a good focusing system, but I'm not sure if they have any 2 AA ones with 2 modes, and I'm still slightly skeptical about them. For closer range use, I just use low mode.

The Nitecore EZAA could work if you don't need the focusing. It's a twistie, so twist on, 2 modes (twist for low, twist more for high, untwist to go back to low, or more for off), 1 AA, bright enough, don't worry too much about the lumen rating. A 10 lumen light (very throwy) can throw more then a 1000 lumen (floody) one.

:welcome:

The adjustable beam really does narrow down the choices. Why are there so few? Because unlike mags the beam on most lights is very useful for a wide range of applications without the need for adjustments. The adjustables usually leave rings and/or donut holes that are distracting in real use. If you are looking for a light that can throw a [narrow] beam really far, you aren't going to find it in an AA powered light anyway, so I suggest you keep your options open and not limit your choices to lights with adjustable beams - you'll have dozens of great lights to choose from.

Twisty lights that might work for you:
Peak Pacific [available in SS, brass or Al ]
Jetbeam C-LE

If a tail click light would be acceptable, I would highly recommend an Eagletac P10A2. It uses two AAs, and adjusts between hi & low by turning a ring near the head about a quarter turn so you can choose the level before you turn the light on. Very well made and very bright on high.
