Flood or throw...I dunno!

Been looking and reading many reviews here. They are very informative on which does what. Its the beamshots that I don't quite get. Im wanting a small (<9") flashlight that will give a broad bright spot of ~30ft wide at 100 yards. Should I be looking for a flood or throw type light. Am thinking that the throwers would be too narrow at 100 yards and the floods will not be bright at 100 yards. I can't tell from the beam shots. I know spotlights will do this but not sure about a small flashlight. I have been looking at the Tiablo, Lumapower, and Surefire.
Thanks for any thoughts.

A quad die LED light might do the job for you. If you can figure out the beam angle, then you can calculate how wide the beam is at a certain distance.

Well to be fair, the M6 is a monster thrower.

For flood, how would the Malkoff MCE hold up to 100 yds?

I don't personally own one, but from the threads I recall from the past, I don't know if there would be much light at 100 yds.

30 feet at 100 yards is like having 10 feet at 100 feet. That's a pretty tight beam almost equivalent to an average aspheric which usually is about 8 feet at 100 feet. Maybe a good light is a large head P7 light like an Aurora AK-P7 from DX, I have one and it will produce a pretty throwy beam that will go out to 100 yards easy but still have enough spill to be useful for the immediate area.

30 Feet at 100 Yards is definitely a thrower. Very few lights can get a spot smaller than that at 100 yards. If my mental math is right that's about 3 degrees of divergence from the center axis.

Possibly Fenix TK40.

Yes I saw some 100-200-300 foot beamshots with the TK40 and would be happy with that but looking for a smaller size.

How would the Tiablo A9 do at 100 yards? Would it provide a ~30ft wide bright spot?
Would it compete with the TK40?

The TK40 will be much brighter than the Tiablo A9, and while I have yet to have seen a direct comparison between the two lights, I think the TK40 would also out throw it. The A9 will give great performance though, and will easily provide a bright spot at 100 yards as it is made for throw.

A Maglite modded with P7 and shortened for 18650 battery will do what you want.

You state that you like the TK40, but want something smaller. Maybe wait till the TK30 comes out. It can use 2*18650's or 4 CR123 batteries, same output, and similar reflector assembly, so it should have the same beam pattern.

Thanks for the help here. I'll check out that TK30, the size sounds about right. I did notice the LF Seraph lights which look interesting with the D36 turbo head and all the 9v & 12v LAs to go with it. Switching back n forth LED/Incan might be interesting also.

That's really cool beam shoot comparison. I had TK30 for about a week. I would recommend it for people who biking at night or don't like to carry lots of AA batteries for TK40.
