I recently bought 2 new 9V PowerEx True 9.6V NiMH batts of Servaas here in Australia to use with my new CMOY Amp. Well anyhow I placed one if my amp and put the other one in the front pocket of my backpack/bag. Not knowing that I had metal objects such as coinns, paper clips etc in there. Well today I took out the 9V batt and the outside casing was warped, peeling off.

The voltage went down rapidly from 11.5V to 1.8V approx and the case was warped and heat must of caused this

What do you think happened?

you did the hot pocket battery dance :) you can do this dance with regular 9v alakines too, although it isnt as painfull its much funnier to watch.
9v battery will easily short on keys, knifes, coins,or even a pocket flashlight. you couldnt GET it to do that on purpose if you tried, but it is sure to happen when put in with those items. a quick piece of tape or a wide rubber band over just ONE side will prevent that.

Ok and your saying it got hot and warped the case, lucky didnt catch fire

yes, direct short, ni-mhy pumps out tons of power , connection points heat up to red hot, battery gets hot, totally unlikly to actually bust out of its containment, but it could indeed start a fire with the right conditions, but that is unlikly to.

hey he said it was a stupid question :)
there ARE places that will refund you, and take it as a business loss and a learned customer , but the battery itself did a pretty good job :) after all it had awesome power going on for a while :D

Another Q here, I also had a Panasonic 9V Alkaline in the same pocket as well, but quite strangely nothing happened to this one and like I said it's Alkaline not NiMH like my previous one.

Wow good advertising for Panasonic :D

Why? Because it just happened (by pure luck) to not get shorted out (by YOUR fault) like the other one?
