Fried Lathe Motor

Well, I really did it this time. I managed to fry the stock motor for my HF 8x12 lathe. Looks like this is it's way of telling me I need to upgrade it. :D

I'm just wondering which way I should go with my upgrade. Should I stick with an AC motor (cheap) or switch to a variable speed rig?

Looks like an electrolytic capacitor expelled its contents forcefully. Why not install a new cap?

I'll see what my local motor repair place says about it. If it's going to be more than $25-30, I think it would be a good time to check out this combo for variable speed.

Ouch, sorry to hear dude. I would try a new cap first, unless you have the time (and some money, not a lot if using Ebay) for the Variable speed setup (which to me is the way to go with these lathes).

Is the lathe still under warranty? I would email the pictures to HF/manufacturer. They would hopefully ship you a new motor.

It's still under warranty, but last time I had warranty service from HF, it took 2 months to get to me.
