My objection is to the name:
Special Ops Rechargable Military-grade Flashlight
How is Special Ops going to Recharge that flashlight on an hilltop in Afghanistan?
-
Special Ops Rechargable Military-grade Flashlight
Military-grade means nothing unless accompanied by the spec. No NSN number means the military does not actually buy that flashlight.
Surefires have NSN numbers;
Fultons have NSN numbers;
Even Maglites have NSN numbers.

*cough cough* PIN number ATM machine :nana:

military could use this light, it could be a great target for a sniper,
say 500 yards and more.

but seriosly, the light has a fan and a motor that are exposed to elements, drop it in water, or sand, see how long it'll work after that.

Who said it's LED flashlight? It's 5000lm and single mode...

I'm with you! I read the catalog and specs pretty carefully and no where does it state that's an LED. Although, it's pretty small for an HID of that output too. I can just imagine the heat buildup!!

Considering there are HID lights that run on NiMHs I'm not entirely convinced its LED, perhaps they've mistaken Candelas for Lumens?:nana:

I sent an email to Frontgate 2 days ago asking if it was an LED light and if so what kind of emitter it had. They responded quickly but did not have an answer so they said they would forward my email to a "product specialist". no answer yet.

I'm not sure if the flashlight is the same light engine but a press release on wavien's site indicates that the have a 5,000 lumen system comprised of an array of 7 LEDs.

VALENCIA, Calif., May 13, 2010 — Wavien, Inc. will be demonstrating the latest advance in LED lighting using its proprietary Premien(TM) LED Recycling Technology.

Wavien's 5,000-lumen system combines seven independent LEDs. "Wavien's Premien LED recycling technology offers outstanding brightness by recovering high angle light from the LED that is normally wasted with traditional LEDs," stated Dr. Kenneth Li, President and CEO of Wavien, Inc., who is also the inventor of the recycling technology.

Dr. Li added: "This unique design enables LED-based products to be able to increase total brightness by over 80%." This performance improvement is provided by adding a reflector with an aperture to the standard LED package. The diameter of the opening, which determines the amount of recycling, can be scaled to meet the user's needs. The Wavien demonstration uses a series of seven single LED chips that are symmetrically arranged. This relatively compact array produces over 5,000 lumens and allows for LED-based lighting to move to the next level. "Clearly, applications that we previously reserved for traditional lamp-based platforms are now open to the benefits of very bright LEDs," stated Dr. Li.

Not saying its perfect, but
http://www.addausa.com/waterfan/AQ FAN BROCHURE.PDF

And http://www.ystechusa.com/cutting-edge/IP67.html
says they have fans upto IP 67 :naughty:

I'd guess those would have a better chance then most.

so?
even if the motor is waterproof, which is possible, it doesn't matter, wet screen will will become clogged, internals will get dirt stock to it, blades will attract dust and dirt to a leading edge which will become dirty and reduce its ability to move air as designed. , and if it ever gets dropped in sand.... waterproof motor and sealed bearing wont matter.

This is frontgate's response to my question about the specs of the light:

This flashlight has a single 50W LED.

NI-MH rechargeable 4D battery pack

Beam is concentrated to less the three degrees

LED has a heat sink and is fan cooled.

Variable drive currents of 1A~13.5A

Frontgate also said the light is using Wavien's "led recycling technology". They also sent me a Wavien press release that says Frontgate is selling the Wavien light.

hrm. 100 lm/w at such high drive currents? :tired:

sounds pretty similar to a varapower in specs alone -- with the addition of a fan. - and the varapower is more reasonably driven.
regardless... interested!

Frontgate has already sold out. Does anyone have screenshots of this beam?

Just use your imagination. Its a square and it is very focused. There is almost zero scatter. The further away the square gets, the bigger it gets. Its rather disappointing.

For any of those that are interested, my batteries were going bad. Every time I went to use it it was dead. I removed the old battery pack by removing the clip and tearing the charge lead. I replaced them with D size batteries. Now its never dead and the energizers just keep going. IMO, they never should have made this with a rechargeable pack.

e

just learned to post pics... So here ya go.
