New P60 Aspheric kits are available from here:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?308032-Ahorton-s-sales-(Lenses-headlamps-...)

Original thread (remnants after the crash):

There was a bit of interest in getting a small, high quality aspheric lens made here:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...d.php?t=296638

... and I've been talking about a spacer to make a P60 dropin here:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...d.php?t=299972

This will be a sales thread for both the lens and the spacer.

At this point in time, it is a pre-sale thread.

I don't normally do pre-sales, but I'm staring down the barrel of a $2000 fee to get these things made and I'd like to recoup some of that cost (and gain a bit of confidence that they will actually sell).

Aspheric Lenses

As promised, the lenses will sell for:

AUD$10 each

10 for AUD$50

20 for AUD$80

50 for AUD$180

100 for AUD$320

I'll be getting 500 (minimum quantity) of these so there is no shortage right now. If you order less than 50 I'll be making a profit. More than that and I'm happy enough to just recoup what I spent.

Spacers

What you'll get with that is the spacer that holds the aspheric lens at the right distance from the LED plus 2 rings of which you can use one or both in front of the aspheric. The rings adjust how deep it sits in the lighthead.

The spacers will be AUD$15 each in any quantity. It's a custom part and I haven't been able to find cheaper in small quantities. Because of the high cost, I won't be making many extras right now.

At some point in the next week I'll make a payment to the machinist and order a couple more than what you guys have paid for. So there will be a shortage of these spacers after I make the order.

Kit

Spacer + Lens AUD$20.

Disclaimer

I don't have these products in my hand right now. Things could go wrong. I'll try to be fair to everyone involved. I don't have a definite plan for what to do if something isn't perfect but I'll work one out as it comes up. I can't imagine that the parts will be useless, but imagine the worst case, that the parts are useless and I refund the shipping cost. If you end up slightly out of pocket, then relax knowing that I'll be in a far worse position.

Postage

Within Australia:

AUD$7 Regular Parcel post.

International:

AUD$25 Registered Airmail delivers in 7-10 working days

AUD$15 Airmail delivers in 7-10 working days

Feel free to use this thread to arrange a group buy to your own country. It'll be easier for me to send one big package and you'll save on expensive shipping.

Payments

The Aussie and US Dollars are pretty similar at the moment, so I'll accept payments in either currency. That is, you can pay AUD$20 or USD$20 for a kit. The AUD is slightly lower, but depending on the day you might lose the difference in Paypal fees anyway.

Paypal: [email protected]

Shipping Schedule

I'm expecting 4 weeks from when I make the order to when I'll be shipping these. If I make the order next week, then you can expect them to be shipped in early Jan and arriving by Mid Jan. I know that seems like a long time. You are of course welcome to wait until next batch but given a similar turnaround time, it won't be before early March.

Purchase list

Norm - 1 kit, paid.

deskbound - 2 kits, paid.

koala - 10 lenses, paid.

Ok,

Most of the data was lost in the crash.

I'll give the summary for any newcomers:

I made 30 and sold 28 before I stopped taking orders.
They were well received and I'll probably make another batch soon. Go to here if you want in.

I don't think anyone used the rings, so I won't bother with them next time.

Not much point continuing discussion here. Those who were involved know what they bought.

Just a pity that the discussion is lost.

Hi AHorton,

I've done some basic research, but wanted to check: I am looking at buying a drop in to use with your aspheric. Do I need to "paint" the reflector black? I have zero experience with this.

Thank you for your help

If you want to use an existing reflector, you won't need to paint it but you will need to modify it. That is, drill it out and raise the LED so that it is in focus.

If you want, you can also paint it to avoid a few artifacts in the beam.

Here's some recreation...., no rings required - but crenulated bezel helps.

Remove existing lens as the aspheric protrudes slightly (lens shown to left)

LED module with no reflector - "other part" from ahorton threads onto module to set distance from aspheric - I ordered an XR-E module from Nailbender

Hard to take the photo (no spill) - if I remember this was taken at about 10 or 12 feet & I had the light switch in there for size.

Crenulated bezel hides / protects aspheric

Thanks Nfetterly, Ahorton,

ok. Correct me if my understanding is off.. the kit that Ahorton has set up to go with his 28mm lens includes the spacer that Nfetterly gave in his second picture instead of drilling and reseating the led - do I have it?

Nfetterly, when you ordered the Led from Nailbender, did you request anything special - I rember in my research one of the members mentioned something about "not bonding something to something..." - sorry about the vagueness.

By the way - extremely nice setup on the orange / black 3P is it?

In reverse order - the light is a FM (FiveMega) "3P" body that I had anodized BRIGHT orange during Modamag's exotic coating run. Nailbender normally (from my understanding) uses some adhesive to bond the reflector to the drop-in. I ordered mine without the reflector - there was someone else that asked for the reflector, but not bonded (no price difference).

The "kit" ahorton sells has a black "spacer" that threads down onto the drop in, in place of the reflector that normally comes on a drop in. You can vary the height slightly in order to best focus the aspheric. No drilling / reseating of the LED required.

cheaper way for me to send things internationally, then I'd do it.

Written by nfetterly on 11-29-2010 04:46 PM GMT

$35 PP sent for one.

I'm open to being a conduit for group mailing within the USA - I've sent
ahorton an email on this and to see if we can work something out.
Email sent. I would have to upgrade shipping to registered if I did
this and cost to ship within USA & Canada (okay - I'm a
Canadian that is a permanent resident in USA - so I'll fill out the
customs paper work - shipping to Canada isn't any more expensive...)
would be somewhat less than the $15 depending on how many people sign
up...., I'm just looking at getting my cost covered.

Time to bump this interesting product up!

Okay, result of email conv - considering I'd be getting extras shipped I'd upgrade my shipping to registered, ($25)

Shipping within USA ~$2.20 in padded envelope

Delivery confirmation ~0.80

Padded envelope ~$2.00

So I would have $5 cost in USA for each shipment (say up to 2 kits), shipping cost same to Canada, but no delivery confirmation

if there are 5 users in USA / Canada then $25 (registered cost) + (5 x $5) = 50/5 = $10

if there are 10 users in USA / Canada then $25 + (10 x $5) = $75/10 = $7.50

I'll list folks below in USA / Canada and I guess when time is
appropriate they PP ahorton the pre-pay and when appropriate me PP me
the postage. No point in sending postage $$ to Australia & PP
getting a hit at it and then ahorton sending me pp for postage & pp
getting a hit again ....

1. RyanA - 1 Kit (Post 10)

2. Chicago X - 2 kits & 1 add lens (post 23)

3. dcaprilla - 2 sets (post 18)

6. bla2000 - 1 set (post 31)(Canada)

Hi,

I just sent $35 US for a Lens/spacer Kit. My paypal name is the same as my CPF handle: bigchelis.

I plan on having this tested for lux with my AEMC CA813 meter. I have a
whole bunch of other P60 drop-ins already tested for comparisons and
might be able to source an XR-E EZ900 to see how much the lux numbers go
up.

Thanks,

Jose

Good news. The lenses are made and hopefully I can collect them today or tomorrow.

Also:

I'm going to have some silicone grease for sale in a few days. 220-250
needle penetration (so it's a hard grease), temperature range = -45°C -
200°C.

It's made by FUKKOL and I've included some of their description below.
It comes in 10g tubes that I've seen elsewhere for around $10 - $14, so I
couldn't resist the offer to buy 100 tubes for $150. I make no promise
about how good it actually is, but if anyone (who has already ordered a
lens or spacer) wants a tube, then send me another $2 ($1.5 each + the
Paypal fee).

I expect it to arrive by the end of the week and I'll probably make the big trip to the post office at the same time.

Description

-FUKKOL Silicone compound series are formulated

from specially selected silicone fluids and inert silica

thickeners.

-FUKKOL silicone compounds were designed for a

variety of applications where dielectric strength, water

repellency and corrosive protection are important.

-FUKKOL Silicone compounds are resistant to

oxidation and to a broad range of chemicals, while

maintaining their characteristics over a wide range of

temperature.

-Available in several consistency to meet specific

requirements, application can be made in valve seats;

o-rings; and vacuum and pressure systems .They can

also be used to lubricate, insulate electrical

connectors and ignition components; and as an

assembly lubricant for rubber and plastic parts.

Application

Lubricant for most rubber and plastic parts.

For O-rings snd valve sealing.

Lubricant for electronics industry.

Benefits

Non-toxic and chemically inert.

Operate at a wide range of temperature.

Excellent lubricity.

Excellent sealing properties.

No effect to most rubber and plastic parts.

Expect them to start arriving next week for Aussies and the following week for the rest.

In theory they should all arrive by Feb 4.

So I guess this thread is just about finished. If there are any more
questions about the presale/ shipping them feel free to PM me or use
this thread, but I'm going to start a new thread for future sales.

I'm hoping for some more discussion about the design of the spacer and that can happen back in this thread.

I have my lux meter CA 813 ready for some readings. P60 pill with
XR-E at 2A and copper slug heatsink....I am trying to break records here
in terms of 1m lux and P60 drop-in.

OTF lumens will be checked too, but with aspherics those numbers are not important.

I will post my findings here for all of youl!!!!!!!!!

Re: FS: Aspheric Lens and P60 Spacer

another thing I'm curious-and sorry if this has been discussed
already before elsewhere-what is the optimum led to use in conjunction
with this spacer/lens, or does it make a difference. As I picture it,
the aspheric should collimate light to a point, regardless of where it
enters the lens -- so an xp-g thrower should perform comparably to an
SST-90 flood as long as they are both putting out the same lumens to
begin. Is that correct? what about using one of moddoo's triple's with
this?

Thanks. Link fixed now. Thanks. Link fixed now.

I'm very happy with the kit but I still want to hear feedback before I
make any more. The spacers that go in front of the lens are ok, but
they don't feel like a perfect solution just yet. So feedback about
them will be good. The most important thing will be finding out how
they go in a variety of hosts.

Just to clarify: If the light comes from an ideal point source
then the lens produces a parallel beam that will throw an infinite
distance (ignoring aberrations from the lens and any kind of
atmosphere). To focus the light to a 'point' you'll need parallel rays
entering the lens. You can almost do this with light rays from the sun
since it is so far away (think magnifying glass making a tiny hot spot)
or a complicated multi-lens set up which I don't think you'll squeeze
into a p60. Just to clarify: If the light comes from an ideal point source

since it is so far away (think magnifying glass making a tiny hot spot)
or a complicated multi-lens set up which I don't think you'll squeeze
into a p60.
smile.gif

Which is the best LED? It depends what you want to achieve. I'm all
about throw, so the best for me is the XR-E R2 (with EZ900 die if
possible) because it is as closest to a point source.

The spacer is designed for the XR-E. Any other LED will need slight adjustments.

The SST-50 and 90 and MC-E are next in line in terms of efficiency. They
must be overdriven to get the same throw as the XR-E because they emit
light over a larger area and their built-in lens sends more light
sideways away from the lens. XP-Gs, P7s and XM-Ls are not so good and
the worst are any mulitiple-emitters (Moddoo's triple) because the
emitters are far from the central axis.

But maybe you want a very smooth circle of uniform light with no spill?
In that case you can use many different LEDs and just shave the spacer
to bring the lens closer to the emitter.

put me down for 2 kits on the next batch.

is march still the next ready date?

Late Feb/Early March I hope to be machining some other things so
I'll get these done at the same time. Late March They should be made
and ready to post.

My kit arrived today. Unfortunately I can't work it out? The rings
are too wide to get past the threads inside the bezel. What am I doing
wrong?

What is the host?

Can you use it without the rings? That's what I've done, even though the rings did fit for me (Ultrafire W501B).

Question, how often are folks needing to use the spacer ring for
the SureFire Z44 & the SolarForce head/bezel assemblies? If the
outer diameter of the spacer ring is an issue, is the lens itself
conveniently referencing off of an internal feature in the head/bezel,
providing the correct spacing?

Re: FS: Aspheric Lens and P60 Spacer

Well I have to say - I had a pile of kits & 1 was missing
spacers!! SO when I finally put mine together - no spacers required as
ahorton commented would often be the case. Cute little setup - glass
removed from bezel - XR-E arrived today from Nailbender - I need to
focus it a bit better, very nice...., the extended bezel helps protect
the aspheric - with just a metal bezel it looked like the aspheric was
flush with the edge of the bezel.

Well worth the wait!

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm new to the field of handheld
flashlights. So I can't quite work out what your pretty orange host is
nfetterly. Is it a modified Surefire?

Re: FS: Aspheric Lens and P60 Spacer
Written by nfetterly on 02-22-2011 08:41 PM GMT

The body is from FiveMega - it's a "3P" - single (cr123 or rcr123)
cell version of 6P - same tail & head as a 6P, 9P, C2, C3, Z2, Z3,
etc....

I had them ano'd during Modomag's "custom ano" run. Bright orange HAII.
Either a mcclicky in the tail, or a netkidz clicky and a xeno
crenulated bezel.

I don't have any SureFires that are not modified.

How does one tweak the focus in these things... I assume it is just
by screwing the pill a turn in or out of the spacer? Pretty setup
nfetterly! My nailbender drop-in should be getting here any day!

Yeah that's pretty much right. I measured so that it should be
right without any paper or plastic rings on the XR-E. Try it with or
without. You may even decide you want it a little bit closer. In that
case you'll have to shave a bit of aluminium off the big end but I don't
think you'll get it much better than it already is. Yeah that's pretty much right. I measured so that it should be

Just make sure that if you decide to unscrew it a bit, that your XR-E is
firmly glued to the pill and that you put a tiny bit of glue or loctite
in the threads so that it doesn't vibrate away from the perfect focus.

Sorry, but I still don't understand what internal feature in the
head/bezel is retaining the lens. Why won't the lens move forward
without the spacer rings being in front of the lens lip, is it because
of where thethreads begin?
confused.gif

Edit: BTW I drew this up some time ago:

SFhead_bezel.jpg

The SolarForce Head/Bezel assembly measures as follows:
H1 = 1.071" (1.050" on the SureFire Z44)

H2 = 0.905" - 0.930" (the edge is beveled rather than flat)

H3 = 1.382" (1.380" on the SF Z44)

H4 = 1.160" (1.125" on the SF Z44)

H5 = 0.156" (0.120" on the SF Z44)

D1 = 0.974" (0.950" on the SF Z44)
D2 = 1.065" (1.060" on the SF Z44)

D3 = 1.133" (1.130" on the SF Z44)

Edit # 2: So is the lip of the lens referencing off of the beginning of
the threads in the above? LOL, that's the only measurement I hadn't
taken ...

OK, the distance between the open end of the SureFire Z44 and the beginning of the threads is 0.560".

them.

Re: FS: Aspheric Lens and P60 Spacer

There is a lip inside the SF head that the regular lens rests on
(as shown in the bottom of the drawing above) - the lip of Ahorton's
aspheric rests on the back of that - I'll try to take some photos of
that - along with the beam shot that I've had requested several times.
After all that's what this is all about.....

I'll post the photos in this post - should be up in an hour or so.

Hard to take photo of something with almost no spill. There are 2
slight visible rings rings, I've moved the spacer out about one thread.
You can see wires (I believe) in the beam. Photo was taken at ~15 feet
and I put the light switch in there so you had some size comparison.

Head without aspheric, you can see the orange lip the aspheric lip will
be under - and you can see the lip of the aspheric on the left

Kestrel,

The Ahorton P60 Holder sits inside the Solarforce L2, then the Lens sits
exactly on top of that. No spacer or Gap in between them and once you
screw down the bezel they stay in that position fixed. The beamshot is
just a Square like all XR-E R2 Aspheric builds.

Here is how it sits inside a L2P for reference:

Anyone tried theirs with a XM-L pill yet. I saw a thread where
Packhorse built a light with with the XM-L and a 27mm aspheric, the
thing was darn impressive. I think focal length should be ok (as I
understand it, focal length is a function of the lens rather than light
source?), perhaps the die height is too different or the emission angles
are too wide though?

OK, thanks everybody for the info, this all makes sense now. What
was confusing me is that I had read earlier where the original flat
lens may or may not interfere with the top of the aspheric dome. Looking
at BigC's pics, I can now see that the original window would have to be
removed for everything to fit. OK, thanks everybody for the info, this all makes sense now. What

Actually was a "group shipping" and yes I would be open to it -
maybe even a group buy this time. Given the aspherics are (1)
relatively cheap and (2) not protected behind glass lens I would
definately want a few more myself. Actually was a "group shipping" and yes I would be open to it -

Yeah it's been a pity about that. I was hoping I'd find a way to
keep it behind the existing flat lens. In every host I've tried there
just isn't enough room. Yeah it's been a pity about that. I was hoping I'd find a way to

Using the crenulated bezel style like shown on my orange one
protects it from easily hitting something as the crenulations go out
further than the aspeheric - but I might want to change it out once a
year or so. Using the crenulated bezel style like shown on my orange one

I decided that there might be a few comments from this thread that were worth resurrecting.

Just an FYI:

The Aspheric Holder with Deal Extreme XR-E R2 EZ900 at 1.4A does 32K lux at 1m off AW 2600mAh cell. (testing done at 5m with AEMC CA813 lux meter).

Are these 27mm Aspheric lens AR Coated?

bigC

32K lux? Every time I turn around someone seems to have recorded a higher reading!

The lenses are not AR coated. You have to do a large batch at a time and a few extra dollars x 500 lenses starts to add up. They really want you to do a minimum of 5000 at a time and make you pay a high rate if you want to do less.

it really does throw insanely well. My onlly dislike is the square beam...I guess that's unavoidable with an aspheric lens? Its still super functional...just not as asthetically pleasing as it could be

Actually it's not the fault of the lens. Blame the LED. If you find an LED with a round emitting surface, then the lens will give you a pretty round beam. If you find such an emitter that comes even vaguely close to the surface brightness of the XR-E R2, then please tell us!

Remember there are 2 types of XR-E R2's.

XR-E R2 EZ100 = normal
XR-E R2 EZ900 = even smaller die and offers more throw, but less lumens.

bigC

No way around the square beam with a proper aspheric setup. The lens is focused on the die and that is what you are seeing.

Ahorton: I would like a couple kits when they are available. I don't know if you will be making a list of names or not. If not, I will just try and keep an eye on this thread.

Thanks

Just an update for those who are interested:

I think the new ones will be a little different to the first batch. I'm planning to make them adjustable rather than fixed to the XR-E focal length.

Advantages:
Can use with any LED. (XR-E, XM-L and SST seem to be the popular choices)
Can get a perfect focus without needing to modify the spacer. (Last time I found that there were just enough tolerances in all the different parts, that some people needed an extra 0.2mm length and others had 0.2mm too much. The difference isn't huge, but we're a fussy mob!)

Disadvantages:
Slightly more work
You can't just screw it on and have it instantly give you a good focus.
Need to make sure the MCPCB is glued to the pill (previously the spacer would hold it on and you could get away with just thermal grease)
Need to put a tiny bit of glue or thread-locker in the threads to make sure it keeps a constant focal length.

I'm not taking names this time, but there should be plenty for anyone who checks back in the first month.

I'm also hoping to offer pills, emitters, drivers and packages.
