I guess this qualifies as my first-ever custom. (go me! :D) A few months ago I bought some neutral-white 250lm Luxeon K2s and I used one to mod my Arc6. I had a spare, so I figured I'd take a crack at modding an Aleph light engine with it. Here's what I came up with:

It came out quite well, I think. The emitter isn't perfectly-centered, but it's reallllllly close, as the following pictures will demonstrate. Close enough, in fact, that I found a really good use for it: it works in a Haiku!

Careful examination will show that, of course, it doesn't fit against the back of the reflector exactly the way the stock Cree LE does, but that actually doesn't make any difference here; heat is conducted through the edges of the LE just like it should be, and the darn thing focuses perfectly. I couldn't have made this come out better if I'd tried.

That beamshot was taken with the bright-sun white balance setting on my camera; here's a comparison beamshot of the stock Cree LE:

As you can see, the Luxeon has a very similar beam pattern and is also much warmer. It has very good color rendition, too. Here it is, installed in a Mule this time, aimed at one of my mom's paintings:

Again, taken with the bright-sunlight white balance setting on my camera. This thing is as close to high-CRI as you can get, this side of a Sundrop. If you were thinking about putting a Sundrop LE in your Haiku, but you wanted something brighter and better-focused, this is what you've been looking for.

$125 including shipping. Check/MO accepted, Paypal preferred. First "I'll take it" gets it. Be the only kid on the block with a Luxeon Haiku!

Also, I believe the GDuP is current regulated, while the Haiku board is PWM.

I just went and checked one of my other GDuP lights, and there is definitely some PWM going on at the lower settings, but based on a conversation I had with Don a while back, it could be that below a certain threshold, PWM is more efficient than current-regulation alone.

Either way, this is a very nice light engine; I might just decide to keep it.

(I would like the money, though, if anyone wants to buy it. :D)

Was it hard to mod the arc6 do u have any spare k2s and what do you think
of the k2 arc 6. I'm thinking of the same with this arc sale on

It wasn't hard to mod the Arc6, by my standards, but I did need to use a Dremel to remove the old heatsink epoxy and it was easier to replace the wires that connect the LED to the driver than to save the existing wires, because the existing wires had glue on them. I'm afraid I don't have any more K2s, but maybe www.futureelectronics.com has some. Look for items that have a "Small Quantities" tag next to them.

Thanks I appreciate your help, what would you say I needed then,

obviously a k2,

maybe new wires (what type would you normally use),

heat sink glue (what type would you normally use - arctic ice?)

solder (any specific type)

I am missing anything?

Is the reflector ok for direct retrofit.

I used silver solder, but regular solder works too. I just used whatever thin wires I had on-hand; you'll see what size you need when you pull the old ones out. You want a K2 with a 1.5amp rating, because the high setting on the Arc6 is 1.4amps. The reflector works fine, but there is one designed specifically for Luxeons that Peter from Arc Flashlight can hook you up with if you want. I don't remember what the deal was with paying him for it, it's been a while. Double and triple check the polarity on the emitter before you solder it in place, and don't lose track of which wire hole on the circuit board is for which wire.

Anyone want to buy my cool (er, warm) light engine?
