I'm more of a gun guy than a flashlight guy, but I've got a Surefire Z2 with a Malkoff and it's awesome. I've ordered another Malkoff M60 and wondered if there would be any problems running it with a Nitrolon? Wondered really about the heat issues of the polymet body versus a metal body? Also, are there any 3 cell flashlights bodies that i could use the M60 with? The extra inch or so should be no problem and I'd get additional run time. I dont' have to buy the CR123 batteries, as work furnishes them, if that matters. I'm learning a lot on here, but have a long way to go.

You are right to think about the heat.

In an all Nitrolon light the heat builds up fast and shortens the service life of the Malkoff. The heat can not quickly transfer from the drop-in to the body then into your hand. Heat KILLS LED's. Using an aluminum head on a Nitrolon body helps a bit but not nearly as much as an aluminum body does.

If you use it in short bursts and give it time to cool between them then you should be just fine. But I don't do it personally, that's what the M60L or M60LL is for.

I suggest you get a 9P or my favorite a C3. All metal for good heat transfer and 3 cells gives you a better runtime. Like you said it's only 1 more inch.

I wish my work could supply my CR123's! I do get alkalines of all sizes. :nana:

If heat is an issue; which as you just heard it might be, could be, will be.

I purchased Solarforce bezels for my Surefire G9 in the past and it worked great with P91 and R2 drop-ins. Go over to the Market Place and you will find metal Surefire 6P/9P bezels all the time. If you pay $9 bucks Lighthound.com sells the Solarforce bezels and they deliver my stuff within 2 days here in CA.

:welcome:

It is not recommended and has been discussed many times in the past. Dont run the full power Malkoff M60 series in an all plastic flashlight. If its price, then by the Solarforce L2 host series. If you just can't live without the plastic G2 get the low powered Malkoff M60L or LL.

You may get away with running it in short bursts but you may push your luck and then wonder why you ruined the Malkoff. You are taking a risk, its not rated to work in plastic with no heatsinking.

I have 4 g2's all running led's.. of coarse they all have metal heads and I am fully aware that I could cook these things at any time. Thats why I am running cheap DX R2's in them. If they cook, i'm out 9 bucks.

That being said, I think if you are going to invest $55 in a drop in, you should have a light that is also worth that, such as a 6p, 9p, c2, c3 and so on.

The nitrolon only insulates the drop in and does not get the heat out of there.

I just about ordered a M60 for a coworkers G2. Luckily he went with the M60L for the longer run time. I'll have to tell him about the close call.

Thanks for all the good advice. I think I'll go with the 6P or maybe the 9P. I've lurked here for awhile, but never posted. There's a lot of detailed info here on this board, most of which may as well be written in Greek. LOL Hopefully I'll get up to speed and learn how to decipher some of the tech answers. Random: I'm in law enforcement.

from the Malkoff site, as of 2/26/2010, regarding the use of the m61:

Note: This drop-in module was intended to operate at maximum brightness for tactical usage similar to the original setup. Operating the unit for more than 15 continuous minutes in plastic lights may cause damage to the drop-in module. This is not an issue in metal lights or in plastic lights with a metal head.

hope this helps!
