I know you all like stories,my daughter is going to spend the night at Ruthin Jail here in the UK around the 18th Sept I think she said and asked me for a loaner.

Something simple as an EDC will be my Terralux Lightstar 100 for her with a fresh cell.

As a backup will give her a Fenix EO1 again with a fresh cell.

Quick question for the members, will 100 lumens be enough or should I reduce the output and give her something else to make it more scary for her, they are in a group and supposed to be lights out in the jail and use flashlights only.:)

The jail has not held real prisoners for many many years and has had a 2 million pound renovation and is now a tourist attraction but has a ghostly past.

If you give her anything that kicks out 100 lumens, it will probably blow away what anyone else will have. That much light might be frowned upon, but you could always check with them to know for sure.

Might want to give her something a little weaker so she doesn't end up with a light that's so bright no one wants her to use it.

Or any ghosts that would be lurking. :nana:

How's it going B0wz3r. I haven't forgotten your suggestion of the Jetbeam.

But I concur, 100 lumens in an "indoors" setting might be too intense. I would think that colour rendering would be important too for contrast.

The Terralux LS100 seems good because it has an adjustable output. Tell her not to forget the voice recorder for EVP stuff or a Trifield EM meter for monitoring "activity."

Hi there, great fun she's going to have, personally i think the combo is just right but switch the main and backups, i.e. the Fenix E01 be the main light and have the Terralux for 'just in case' moments.

If you want it really scary, just get a coupla green cyalume light sticks

Very interesting thread ! ! !

:twothumbs

My thought is a Quark tactical, programmed ONLY in Moon Mode !

;)

Okay, okay . . . .

you can program one mode for LOW !

But no higher than that !

BTW, how old are these young ghostbusters ? ? ?

The Surefire M4 works for Sam & Dean in Supernatural ;)

A couple of long-lasting dim lights would probably be good for safety while not ruining the atmosphere.

Technically for ghost hunting you want as little light as possible.

Just enough to see where you are going, but not so bright as to bugger up the night vision.

Maybe an astronomy oriented flashlight?

I recently found one on e-bay (insert insulting name for them here) that looks quite promising, called the LP-X. It's only $20 so I think I'll pick one up soon. Might work well for your daughter for this kind of outing.

CPFbio... np on the JB rec... I have an ST pro and an RRT-0 and they're both great lights. :)

Strongly considering getting a BK135a from Flavio as a replacement for my EZAAw for my keychain.

Get her a Romisen G2 Q5 from shiningbeam.com.

Single mode
single AA (put a lithium in for her)
perfect size
throws very well
forward clicky
~100 OTF lumen
can remove the head and flood the whole room if needed
And it's ~$21 + shipping.

I want a light so bright... It will make a ghost say "I SEE THE LIGHT!!!"

I'd definitely suggest a multi-mode light so your daughter can preserve her night vision when she's snooping around for restless spirits with a nice low mode but still have the option to kick it up to 200+ lumens if she gets spooked by something. I'm not a superstitious guy, but if it were me I'd take my Fenix TK40 and TK45 for that use so I could light up the place like day time if something suddenly freaked me out. In general though, 100 lumens in high mode is plenty.

Whatever light you let her use, don't forget plenty of spare batteries too.

This is EXACTLY what I thought would be good, maybe even instead of the green cyalume sticks, a Vicks nose inhaler cap for the E01.

I'd feel safer with a 250+ lumen light.... :candle:

What fun is that?

I would suggest a reasonable-power lantern; it will be better for helping others, while at rest, and it's lack of throw might contribute nicely. Think of how many movies you've seen where the guy holds up a lantern in the air to try and see what went bump in the night.

I normally like warmer/neutral tints, but in this case, cool tint would add to the spectral ambiance.

Mag Solitaire. For sure no one will have anything less bright and the donut hole will definitely be scary.

Also I'd pack something ridiculously bright JUST in case.
She could be really scared and want to light everything up.
There may be a situation that arises that immediate light (no time to turn on the real lights) is needed. Say someone falls, and there's some kind of laceration.

If I were going on this trip I would bring my A2L-red as my primary with my ti EDC as backup.
I wish her the best, and good luck finding a suitable torch!

On our investigations somewhere around .5 to 1.5 lumens is what we have found to be a good level for inside a building.

I'll step up the level to somewhere around 10 lumens for larger building areas or outdoors (say, in a warehouse or someones yard), and 40 or so lumens for fields and woods.

Once your eyes are accustomed to the dark you really don't want to use anything more than needed in order to avoid messing up your or any one elses night-adapted vision.

LED's are great as they don't wipe out a night vision cameras view as badly as an incandescent does when you accidentally point it at it (less IR output).

Also, with LED lights if you drop them there no filaments to break and so they're less likely to leave you in the dark with whatever it was that just tugged on your shirt tail  :green: .

I use a HDS Basic 42 XR GT and rarely use anything but the two lowest levels.

Only remember using 42 lumens once while in a cemetery in St. Augustine.

That may change with my new RA 140 (max reduced to 100 lumens) :D.

I am not buying her a light I have more than enough here to choose from, will probably go on the Fenix EO1 as the main and the Terra as a back up or something similar from the collection.

Good choices :twothumbs.

I hope she has a great time.

Let the fun begin:candle: .

+1 E01 with cap.
Also, do you have any warm tint lights in you're collection? A good low on a warm tint looks more scary! :candle:
