Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

I'm just waiting on the custom reflector and potted bulb and the Mini Aurora, a Mag 5D donor body will be complete.

It should be good for 800+ lumens and a run-time of 1.5+ hours. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It should be complete next Tuesday night. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Can't wait! The sad thing is, it's gonna blow away my MagCharger with UMP in both brightness AND runtime... Oh well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif Jealousy is the fuel for the flashaholic! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Will this be available as a turnkey? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Um, I can't endorse calling this a member of the Aurora family of lights...it's got too much runtime! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Wow, 1.5hr runtime 800 lumens!! Rechargbles I assume. What kind/size? I thought the original was a 3D... Is this 5D the same thing only not using AA's?

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

Are you using a 5D host to accomodate a WA01185 and 8 NiMH 1/2D's? I was wondering if that combo could be had as a mod for all MC users by getting a battery extender made. All that would be needed would be the extender, the 3 extra cells and the bulb. The 01185 has lower current consumption than does the 01165, resulting in longer runtime on UMP cells. I think the MC85 would still be able to use the stock charger setup. Does this sound viable to anyone? If so, we'd end up with a bigger/brighter light that on demand could be 3D or 5D in size with correspondingly brighter outputs and longer runtimes. Very much like the original Maglites in concept (bigger=more).

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

I would be interested in getting extenders made up if there is sufficient interest. I've been working with a local machinist and he's champing at the bit to do another flashlight project.

BTW, the WA01185 will run on 9x1/2Ds, thus 4 extra cells. That would fit in a body slightly longer than a 5D so a custom adapter would be just the ticket. Think of it as 2D+ extender. Heck, I could get 1D, 2D and 3D extenders made so you could put whatever batteries you want in the thing.

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

Psycho: Turnkey? I can crank these out no problem but it's Wilkey's creation, we need to ask him permission. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif There would be about 2 different with 3 options I could do this in...

Isaac: We're using Powerex 5Ds to power the MA.

Ginseng: So we would use a 6D for the WA01185 and 9 1/2Ds with an adapter. Sound correct? If so, what kind of run time and output would we get?

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

Hey,
As far as I'm concerned, you can consider this released to the public domain. The more the merrier! You'd get 70 minutes or better in this config, probably closer to 75 minutes.

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

I would think extenders would be relatively inexpensive...especially if you don't go nuts on the anodize. Any idea what a piece price might be, ballpark? Seems to me the larger cost here would be the extra UMP cells.

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

I will ask. I'll work up a quick drawing and get it to my machinist. Aluminum tube, inside threaded on one end, outside threaded on the other with O-ring channels, black anodizing.

Ginseng, any word on making either this or the Aurora as a turn-key for us less technically capable collectors and enthusiasts ?

Dumbo,
This design is non-technical so once S4 shares his story, you can make it yourself. I am working on specing an Aurora TK kit as we speak so please hang tight on that.

Yes, and it's Thursday already /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

Sorry for the delay, the bulbs are being customed potted and they are scheduled to be completed April 16, 2004.

Also, I'm doing two versions:

1) WA01160: 550+ lumens for ~3.0+ hours of runtime

2) Osram "X" bulb (TBA at a later date): 800+ lumens for ~1.5+ hours of runtime.

Should be interesting to compare the 11,000mAH Ds vs. the Powerstream 1/2D and Wilkey UMP.

Finally, if people are interest in this TK, I'm willing to make them, should not be a problem. Pricing, availability, etc... later. I want to test it and make sure it works first. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

Thanks for the update, that was QUICK! (I assume you couldn't stand the whining???)

Re: Ginseng\'s Mini Aurora Is Almost Complete!

How tight can the X-Bulb be focused?
