I have been a CPF member for some time now, but I am just now getting interested in possibly buying a headlamp. I suspect it will be LED. What is the best way for me to come up to speed to learn enough to make an informed choice? I probably won't have time to read all the previous posts here, but are there any must see web pages on headlamps, etc.? I am also wondering if there are any LED headlamps that have rechargeable batteries? I know that many lights can use rechargeable batteries, but I would like the convenience of charging the batteries in the device. The usage would be camping and possibly while horseback riding.

There isn't many headlamps that *have* rechargable batteries but many will accomodate the use of them. As far as determining what headlamp to get I think you need to narrow down the following things:
run time needed off a set of batteries/charge
brightness needed
flood or throw
head mounted pack or belt pack
price range

Re: Rechargeable Headlamp Recommendations

Okay. thank you for the reply. Maybe the quick way to narrow the field is what are the choices of rechargeable headlamps that charge the batteries in the device itself?

I know of NONE that do this, but now that I look at that Icon, it looks like it might do what you ask. I'd probably lean towards the Princeton Tec Apex over the BD Icon, but you'll have to come up with your own rechargeable batteries and charger. The only problem with rechargeable packs like this is that they generally do not have as high of a capacity as comparable individual AA rechargeable batteries.

The Apex is a bit brighter at the highest mode and should run longer due to the use of 4 instead of 3 batteries.

Re: Rechargeable Headlamp Recommendations

consider the cost of 2 battery packs vs the cost of a nice charger and nimh cells for them first. once you have a nice AA/AAA charger and batteries you will be using them in everything and over time save enough money to buy more lights.

Finding headlamp web page is not so diffcilt, but if you want to find nice quality and resonablle price , it seems not so eazy, so you can find more informaitons form [reference removed - DM51]
