I get inspiration from this http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=183261
I try to make a Q5 thrower because I found an aspherical lens which should fit in
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3154 or http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.485

Just want to be sure are theese right stuffs to use:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2394 Q5 led
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3256 drivers, 2x in parallel
And then some heat sink stuff like http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9339

and anything else I should know?
Just wondering also how to keep lens in?
Using some glue after finding the right spot for it or?
I´m going to ask for saabluster how he keep that heavy lens in that tube, but if anybody have good advice that would be nice.

Why don't you make a Maglite with asperical lens ? it's much easier.
then you can alsow focus.

Because don´t have any maglites and those cost much here in Finland and if I order one from ebay it will cost a lot too because delivery cost.
And I don´t have D/C cells, it would come even more expensive to buy rechargeable D cells + charger.

As I try to go for a low budget.

okay. i only order my maglite's from ebay, and i leave in sweden. and it's cheaper than if i buy them in the store's here. and the rest of the stuf is free shipping. you can check out my mag asperical at my homesite.

I am looking to build the same aspherical Saabluster did but can't find a broken SVX headlight yet, and DX is out of stock on the flashlight (Apparently some are going to arrive today at DX)

I'm glad you are inspired by my work. Thank you. Since you are just starting out with flashlights I think recreating what I've done is a bit much to tackle. 1st I would start off with modding a Mag first. There is a kit from KD that is plug and play. This will help you learn the basics. 2nd, read. Spend some time around here reading and learning.

Some thoughts. Anyone feel free to step and correct me, please.

Not meaning to be rude. Just do not know. What is your electrical/electronics background? There is a bit more to LEDs than light globes. Blow a LED and there goes $5-10, and another 3 week wait for DX to send more. <G>

(1) Why are you using 2 X drivers?
- I am not sure how well these work in parallel.
- On DX, the guys who have used them say they put out about 750mA. If the input volts are higher than 3.7 (Q5 volts) this could translate to an even higher current at the LED. 2 X will blow the LED even at 750mA each.

I am afraid that the best way to get the "right" driver from DX is to buy a lot of different ones that say they are right, and find one that suits. The QC is ummm....too. Read the reviews about http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4735. One guy says its great, giving him the 1040mA when the battery is at about the volts of the LED. Another guy says he was only getting 500mA. shrug. It could be the board, or it could be his bad soldering.
- DX is dirt cheap and the postage is free.

(2) That heatsink compound you mention will not hold stuff together. It is simply a grease. Better to use
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4579, which is an actual silicone adhesive heat compound. It has the added advantage that you can, with care, prise the LED off the heatsink later if you want to.

(3) Unless an aspherical lens has a different characteristic from a spherical one (and I do not think its visual properties are different) then if you really "throw" any of these LEDs you will get a square shaped light: and actual picture of the LED's dies projected.

EDIT: I correct myself here. Aspherical lens shots do show a round pattern. Not sure what happens if you get them _right_ on focus though.

(3) Q5s come on different heatsinks; apart from the stars there are also 16mm and 14mm backs as well at DX. That may be useful to know if you want to reduce size at all.

Have a really good look around DX. Read the reviews on each item. Then maybe come back and ask doem more here.
