DX offers a single AA light called hFlash HF2. From the photos it appears to be a solid light, nice features such as Cree LED, OP aluminium reflector, glass lens, tail clicky.
Anyone got one ? Would buy it agn ?

From the DX website:
- Light meter test: 400lux throw @ 1m

I only hope it's an error because the MTE SSC 1xAA is rated 3700 lux.

I agree the Hi-flash is looking more solid.

If it's 4000lux i am in.

Well, at 1.5h runtime to 50%, it would have to be some reasonable brightness. And they say "working at 1W power", so it appears they feed it a 1500mAh cell. Not assuming that all figures are right.

yeh i was wondering about this light as well...looks pretty nice for a AA light. it looks like a mini huntlight/lumapower...the output doesnt sound so great tho...

Dunno. Looks cute. It kinda looks like a KL4... I'm sure that's no accident.

The text says "lots of spill". That might explain the low lux numbers at one meter, but the beamshots look pretty focused.

Maybe I should order one...

Got mine today. My sixty second initial impression is that I like it. It won't win any awards for being the smallest AA powered Cree light, but you've already figured that out by looking at the pictures on the DX site. I'm not sure why it has such a large reflector if it wasn't designed to throw better than your average AA light. Regardless, the reflector works extremely well. I may have been lucky, but mine has the best centering I've ever seen on a Cree. The texture works very well too. There's nearly zero "Cree ring". I really like the beam on this one.

Build quality is very good. All the parts feel sturdy and well machined. The threads work as they should, and everything lines up well. There's a good heft to this little light - it feels very solid. It's too bad it isn't hard anodized, but it wasn't expected at this price.

The tailcap has the typical reverse clicky, and it seems this one won't tail stand. It came with a lanyard already attached. The window does indeed appear to be glass.

Maybe later I'll pull out the lux meter and try to confirm the readings reported on DX. I might try to get a beam shot, too.

It's not 4000 lux, but it isn't 400 either. My light meter is handy, but my measuring tape isn't (go figure). My HDS Basic 42 (completely stock) is somewhere right around 1200+ lux at one meter. Others have reported similar readings, so I think my meter is close enough. I'm seeing about 1400+ lux at very roughly one meter with the HF2. This is with a slightly used Duracell alkaline AA.

I'll test it again later tonight with a charged NiMH cell and a measuring tape.

Thanks for buying and reviewing it, Ty_Bower !
So it looks like this light is a well-made little tank with focus on reliability and light quality, while light output is average and size is on the high side. Should make it a nice size to hold.
What about regulation ? When you compare the battery current with 1.2 V NiMH and 1.5 V Alkaline, is the current higher with the lower voltage source ?

I've had the hFlash HF2 for awhile now. So far, no contact problems / switch problems or flickering. With a new battery, the light is brighter in overall output than the high setting on my L2D CE as well as the Nuwai X3 2AA (Rayovac 3W). Threads are still smooth after many battery change operations. With the reflector assembly taken out, it puts out an awesome very wide flood. I'm getting around half an hour of regulated output on alkalines, and closer to an hour and a half on lithiums. I think some of the older models of this HF2 had too much anodize around the contacts causing the flickering problem, but the one I got is all bare aluminium around the head and the front lip of the battery tube. The fact that this light is built like a tank is also an obvious plus.
