How can there be so many different flashlight companies?

Back around 1910 when the so called flashlight was introduced there were a few companies making products that could produce a brief burst of light from a wet cell battery. Novelties for people with loot. Yet almost as soon as the actual flashlight was marketed other companies began producing their own version. Only a few mind you, but it didn't take long for competition to spring to life. By the 1920's there were numerous companies making them.

All through time until the late 1960's there were hundreds of flashlight makers all around the world. When the alluminum cop light was introduced it was a novelty. By the mid 1970's though they were being produced by several companies.

Eventually the LED light was invented along with being produced in a country with really low labor cost and boom. Profit nirvana. And when they could produce more than 250 lumens from 2aa batteries....LED light makers exploded on the scene like an atomic bomb.

In the meantime there is a market out there for high end everything including flashlights so there are a number of high end light makers to satisfy that market too.

Profit margin has to be high.
If not, all those cnc machines would be making something else.

Private labeling. Because it's not that difficult to come up with a set of specs, quality standards, prototype, etc and then shop it around to negotiate a production contract that fits your needs from one of the many established overseas manufacturers. And then you market it. This applies to clothing, fishing gear, plastic kitchenware, etc--basically any consumer good you can think of.
