what is the green stuff that surround the LED on DBS V2?

Is that thermal paste?

if I want to upgrade the LED, how can I remove the thermal paste?

How do I solder the new LED on to the same board ?

the stuff around a cree is Often something to protect the reflectors from shorting the cree when they drop on top of it, because the reflector (metalacized pastic or real metal) will drop in and short the top of the cree "emitters" tiny board thing.

i bet StephanFS knows, cause he was making a pill before his even arrived.

here you can see the pill with the clear insulator on top of. WadeF

it looks like the cree emitter item, is on a small round "star" board, where to start would depend on the tools you have, and your replacement item , like i might start with a sledge hammer and a bandsaw and a blowtorch :) others have more finesse , and could remove JUST the emitter top off the star board. star boards themselves are held down with completly different stuff in different things, and will come up easily in one piece , or just need a bigger sledge hammer :)

anyways, those are the people to ask.

The material around the LED is probably to prevent shorts as VidPro said. If it's a hard material that's adhered to the board, it's epoxy. Getting that stuff off can be a chore and there's really no easy way to do it.

I'd reflow solder using a hot plate to change LEDs on star boards, but a layer of epoxy would complicate things.

Much simpler to buy a new pill...
More expensive than an emitter, though.

.

hence the blowtorch  , really :xyxgun: as long as you can reconnect to the WIRES (there under any epoxy), and you only need the metal pill to survive the adventure.
just BBQ it at 600* for 14 minutes , then wipe off the ashes , recover the heat sink thing, wash off the soot, and put in a new mini-star.
:hairpull: why did i use J&B weld anyway :D
by the way, it is a bad idea to do that Inside a house , even a tablespoon of electronics have a whole house of that smoke stuff they run on, and using a blowtorch lets all the magic smoke out of them at one time.
