How do you disassemble a P1D CE?

Does anyone know how to get a P1D CE head apart? I got an early P1D CE, and I'm thinking it would benefit from an upgrade to a Q5 emitter.

I've modded a lot of lights including putting an SSC P4 into Fenix P1, Civictor, and several L1Ps (and won't do any of those again -- what a pain!), and upgraded the Cree to a Q5 in an L0D CE, L1/L2/P2, and P3 (all easy). But it's not obvious how to get the P1D CE apart. Has anybody done it without destroying the light?

Hi CC,

the light is comprised of three sections, the head, tail and pill; the pill is threaded all the way up (you only normally see half the thread as the rest is screwed into the head) and screwed into the head with the addition of thread locking cement.

It took a lot of force with mine (I upgraded it to a Q5 some weeks ago) but by protecting the threads with many turns of PVC tape and some rubber then clamping the pill in some Molegrips I unscrewed the pill from the head.

From there the LED can be removed without damage and the pill cleaned up.

Good luck, I hope you don't damage the threads.

I've done this mod also. It seems, as I have read, that the black ones come apart easier than the natural. I tried with a natural with no success. Quit before I destroyed it.
Anyway the point of my post is, if the treads are damaged a little, they can be fixed with a thread restorer file.

Mine is a natural so that may explain why it was so tough! I have put in a Q5 but I am really not overly impressed with the tint so it has been relegated to the glove box of the car, it is pretty bright though!

I found that my threads were better for the work, I think twisting through the rubber cleaned them up a bit!

twist them apart with two SMALL rubber strap wrenches, ZERO damage to both pieces, and the rubber straps are very grippy and non marring.

Thanks very much, everyone! Looks like a piece of cake. What I hadn't realized is that the visible threads were just part of the pill which screws into the rest of the head.

i just bought the special edt q5, had an excuse cos i lost my p4 one..

this seemed an appropriate place to post that, sorry for the randomness !

My P1D CE now has a Q5 emitter. I gained 22% in lux level and total light output, about what I expected and just enough to make it worth the trouble. But now the next emitter will be a lot easier to put in.

Thanks again!
